Overrated

I liked the movie and appreciate Eddie Redmayn's performance, but Birdman and Michael Keaton simply blew my mind. No idea how Jake Gyllenhaal (Nightcrawler) wasn't nominated at all.

reply

Probably because Nightcrawler's main character was essentially a clone of Rupert Pupkin from 30 years ago - nothing new here.

I agree that "The Theory of Everything" was overrated, but not for the reasons you cite. I judge movies on their own, not in comparison to other movies. I'm a fan of Hawking's ideas, and have read "A Brief History of Time". So it's not as if I don't care for the man. But I'm really not that interested in his personal life.

The same is true for other people I admire. Musicians, artists, actors, authors, movie directors, and on and on. I enjoy their works, but don't really care about them as people. That may sound cold, but I just don't; it's their work I care most about. They may be a-holes, they may be nice people, they may or may not have suffered adversity in their lives. Not important to me.

I think this film got more attention because of the admittedly fine acting of Eddie Redmayn. But too often actors get rewarded for playing disabled people. While I do admire his performance, the movie didn't really interest me all that much.

Birdman was okay, but is incredibly overrated. Enjoyed this a lot more.

Jesus, Tom, they took his hair. . .Who'd do that?

reply

People need to move on from Keatons loss. the director of birdman is probably the best director walking the face of the earth. Keaton was playing a rip off version of a character he played so many years ago. Redmaynes emotions and the way he portrayed the disability was incredible. And to sit bundled up like that the way he did could have been so bad for his spine. He never once broke out of character. By the end of the theory of everything i saw no redmayne, only hawking. Biopics are hard to nail imo. But redmayne absolutely nailed it. No doubt about his win.
