One of the worst films of 2015

There’s nothing worse than a terrible comedy, except when that said comedy is both passionately uninspired and entirely inept as a result. It’s hard to wrap your head around the worst aspect of the ferociously tone-deaf Anne Fletcher comedy Hot Pursuit. It could be the 87 minute running time that I mistook to actually be two hours. It could also be the fact that Sofia Vergera has made her Gloria Delgado-Pritchett persona into a screeching, unbearably insufferable (and completely unfunny) parody at this point in her career. It may very well be the complete waste of a perfect-good Jim Gaffigan as a hick sucker trying to get his rocks off and losing some body parts in the process. Or the entire lack of care given to making this buddy-cop(ish) story the most generic, directionless and sterile comedy it could be. Or how this is Reese Witherspoon’s acting and producing follow-up to her wonderful return-to-form in Wild just last year. Either way, in a year where female comedies like Trainwreck and Sisters have raised the bar higher than ever before, to know Hollywood continues to think this is what audiences will be dumb and careless enough to accept at face value proves this road trip comedy is even more lost than it may think.
