Good cast...

The source material may be dodgy, but Matthew Rhys, Jenna Coleman and Mathew Goode? Solid. When Joe Wright's "Pride and Prejudice" came out, I actually lamented that as wonderful as Judi Dench was, wouldn't it be lovely if Penelope Keith had gotten that exposure as Lady Catherine. I am very delighted she was cast here, she's perfect for the part.

The cast does look to be good. And we can only hope the adaptation is better than the source material. Granted, it doesn't happen often, but it does happen.

I can't believe the ridiculous comments below. AMM is hardly hideous. She's more than lovely in Becoming Jane, and she is an exceptional actress! I've always thought of her more as Jane than Lizzy, but I'm not going to complain.

A Spec~Savers appointment for Random~movies in the New Year I think!

reply

I like almost all of the cast, but I'm not at all fond of whom they cast as Lizzie. Not at all what I envisioned, and (not meant in a mean way...just as an observation) just not attractive (not expecting supermodel, but she IS supposed to be pretty).

reply

Anna M Martin is, to put it bluntly, hideous, and this casting is ridiculous.
I am all for diversity, and she was brilliant in Bleak House, but come on..

She was miscast in South Riding also.

reply

Anna maxwell martin is indeed a very ugly elizabeth bennet/darcy. Unbelievable casting. Why do they want this show to fail?

reply

Matthew Rhys isn't really Darcy looking to me either.

reply

Then of course this Darcy is 5 years older than the one in P&P. He's now happily married and a father, which is a huge difference from the original Darcy.

reply

If only keira knightley had been approached and accepted this role! That would have been so brilliant.

reply

I am assuming H-H that you are joking!

Anna MM is not ugly, but she has this slightly tired look that doesn't strike me as lively as Lizzie is, that is why she is miscast (slightly, she is a bloomin good actress and I would much rather have a good actress than someone cast because she is pretty or a name...should I have to mention Billie Piper as Fanny Price?).

If you love Satan and are 100% proud of it copy this and make your signature!

reply

Slightly tired and not as lively is a good description. And she is more plain than the movie versions have led us to believe. Jane is supposed to be the prettiest, but it's never cast that way. This Elizabeth is no beauty, but she also does not have the spirit of the Elizabeth we love. Maybe that's what marriage and parenthood did to her.

reply

I think they wanted an actress.

reply

I think they wanted an actress.

Yes, well Michelle Yeoh and Angela Bassett were available as well, but they oddly didn't go for them either. There's something to be said about trying to find an actress that fits the role and not just going for a one-size-fits-most mindset.

reply

Bluntly is hardly the word. Calling somebody hideous is vile.

reply

I agree, it was not nice of me to call her hideous. I am not even remotely pretty, and therefore I appreciate beauty in others (natural beauty that is).

I expect Elizabeth to be pretty, interesting and somewhat feisty.

Some actors and actresses are not cut out to be the beautiful hero/ine. Like Toni Collette or Robbie Coltrane and many more. To me, Anna M Martin is in this cathegory.

reply

In the book, neither Elizabeth nor Darcy are terribly interesting. They are, in fact, rather dull and boring.

reply

I don't think Lizzy is boring. I think she is fun and funny.

reply

Lizzy from this book is funny? We barely see her.

reply

LOL, I haven't read this book. I thought you meant JA's.

reply

This book is not great. Not even close.

The movie was actually better.

The actress who plays Lydia looks nothing at all similar to her on-screen sister. She looks Spanish while Lizzie looks British...

Also, why is Georgiana still crying about Wickham? It's been yeeaars since that incident--get over it. Gosh.

reply

I think Lizzy and Darcy seem miscast, but the other actors seem fitting for the roles.

George Lucas talking about: 'Hey, give it to me, I'll fix it. I'll make 20 more of them'

I agree, people keep lamenting over the cast for Lizzie and I thought she was superb, yea she looks a little older than Darcy, but she's an amazing actress. Lizzie is a mother and wife of six years and she's running a huge household, not to mention we see her in a very strained situation, she's not going to be giggling and joyful and witty about someone having been murdered on the property, and her husband and her are sort of fighting. I thought they put appropriate and cute moments of fun and romance and developed the tension well also. And I LOVED the actor for Darcy, he was amazing as proud, loving, father, husband, he just embodied Darcy to a T. and of course Matthew Goode is a favorite for me and he did excellent as always. So people
