Speaking of this mini-series...(a plea)
Shows like Downton Abby have proven that people enjoy well-written period dramas set on wealthy estates full of lively characters from every class. As an avid P&P fan, I've wondered lately why they've never developed a television series based on the characters from this book -- a continuation of the story, if you will. Good writers could easily come up with storylines for these amazing characters. So many options...
How does Lizzie handle being mistress of an estate like Pemberley? Will she be able to produce an heir?
Georgiana's coming out into society and Darcy's handling of potential suitors...
Colonel Fitzwilliam's perpetual bachelorhood...
The irritating Mr. Collins and the wife who must put up with him...
Lady Catherine's snobbish behavior and inability to accept Elizabeth as Darcy's wife...
Silly-ass Lydia's marriage to Wickham the wicked...
Jane and Bingley's new life together as the sweetest couple ever...
Caroline's raging envy over Lizzie's new situation...
The other three Bennett sisters and what will happen to them, not to mention Mr. and Mrs. Bennett...ALL characters many can't get enough of, whether we like them or not. And of course at the center of it all, a perfectly matched couple who have to work as hard on their happily ever after as anyone else.
There are countless written sequels, variations, what-if scenarios, fan fiction, and modernizations, because there is a huge demand out there to delve deeper with these characters, especially Darcy and Lizzie. Done properly and with the RIGHT casting, it would make one hell of a seasonal series a la Downton. I'm also convinced it would be a hit right out of the gate.
Now tell me why this is a bad idea or why it will never happen.
