Boring. Definitely not helped by Jenna Overactor Coleman.

Here's a hint: Make what audiences want, not what you want to shove down audiences' throats. Got that, crap merchants?

But different people like different things. To me, Pemberley is so much better than most of what's on U.S. TV.

Meryl Streep is a shape-shifter.

reply

I'm quite sure you're the only other person I've come across who couldn't stand her in this. She looked like she'd stumbled into the show from a completely different series, and I thought she overacted the way the too-loud kid in the class does in the school play.

A lot of people love her because of her other work, but when you watch her in this show, she sticks out like a sore thumb.

reply

Well - I totally disagree. I thought she was the perfect Lydia and as far as the overacting, I saw an interview with her and she pretty much asked the director how much of that they wanted. And they told her a lot, so it was what she was DIRECTED TO DO!!!!

Good Job Jenna!!!!!!

I don't know if you watched the televised series of Pride & Prejudice but Lydia Bennet was exactly as Jenna Coleman AND Julia Sawalha played her. Flighty, flouncy, erratic, self-absorbed and histrionic. I knew Jenna had to be Lydia when she first appeared on the screen just by her mannerisms - before she even spoke or was revealed to be Lydia.

Has anyone seen my wife? - Columbo

reply

The only reason I watched it was because Jenna Coleman was in it. So they did give this part of the audience what it wanted.

reply

I thought Jenna did a terrific job. She completely made me forget Clara Oswin Oswald.

It's a comedic role. That's how Austin wrote her as well - a completely stupid and shallow girl. Jenna got it spot on.

A very good Lydia indeed. I suspect the OP has not read P & P.

Here's another hint.

I think you'll find it's those who endlessly try to supply only what they think audiences want who make all the crap.

This was a brilliant alternative to the Downton Abbey Christmas Special and sadly, I can't see anything that looks nearly as good this Christmas.

And I'm not normally a JLC fan but she bloody-well nailed Lydia.

Spielberg take note (pleeeeease).

No. Although if you like musicals, there is That Day We Sang on Boxing Day. Looks good. And I'm looking forward to Kiss Me Kate/War Horse at the Proms.

I know and love Kiss Me Kate, but what kind of mash-up is that with War Horse at the Proms??

reply

Lol. No, sorry - lazy writing on my part. They are two separate programmes - Kiss Me Kate at the Proms and War Horse at the Proms.

Be more careful with that punctuation in future, supergran!

As we speak, a crack BBC production team under Head of Output, Anna Rampton, has dedicated two whole episodes of Britain's Tastiest Movie Mash-Up to blending War Horse and Kiss Me Kate. Head of Values Ian Fletcher says "Wunderbar" and "The Christmas Truce" are a marriage made in heaven. "We haven't seen Xmas-oriented, Appointment-to-View programming like this since Ken Loach sang Once in Royal David's City on the roof of Broadcasting House."

They're onto a winner there! I'd pay good money to see that! (Only hope they mention me in the credits.)
