Things you would have liked to have seen in DCTP

Spoilers

- Firstly Elizabeth should have had two or three children not just the one. As it was she came across as mostly a kind of "working class" mistress of Pemberley with her sleeves perpetually rolled up. Whereas with more of an emphasis on her as a mother it would have softened her image a little and made her seem more a woman of her own time rather than a woman of this one.

- Lydia was too "nice" in my opinion. She should have been played by an older actress as a woman who had "let herself go" and become thoroughly obnoxious with it. Maybe a boozer as well. Then she could have been seen as more of a contributing factor in Wickham continuing on in his bad ways.

- Using Colonel Fitzwilliam as the other "villain" didn't sit well with me. I would have preferred it if there had been another suitor for Georgianna or simply if that story line had been dropped altogether.

- There should have been more of a role for Wickham's mysterious sister Mrs Younge who was potentially the most interesting character in the mini-series and the best choice for the main villain. I would have had her not as Wickham's sister but as an obsessed and slightly insane long time lover of Wickham who wanted Wickham to leave Lydia and marry her. Wickham wouldn't do so and failing that Mrs Younge was determined to have the baby he had fathered on Louisa Bidwell. She could have been the one who murdered Captain Denny when he threatened to spill the beans to Louisa Bidwell. As it was the way Captain Denny died seemed to me to be quite a stretch as well as a cop out.

Agree with 1 and 4 and I was surprised at Col Fitz.

But I thought Lydia and Wickham were just as I imagined them. Always pulling through.

Knightley has been slammed for being far too pretty. I give up.

As much as I like Anna Maxwell Martin as an actress I think she was miscast in DCTP. If I remember correctly AMM is the mother of two very young children and looks a little haggard on it to me, (I rather doubt AMM has the help of a nanny as Elizabeth Bennet most likely would at Pemberley).

But in my opinion Keira Knightley wouldn't have been a much better choice to play Elizabeth Bennet either. Although pretty she is also on the thin (if not haggard) side I think.

My choice would have been someone like Sophia Myles who is the right age, a good actress, quite attractive and also looks in the sort of physical condition you might expect her to be as the pampered mistress of Pemberley.

Sophia Myles? It would have been fun to see her act opposite Matthew Rhys again. They made a lovely couple in "The Abduction Club", they had a certain chemistry that I felt was lacking in DCTP between Darcy/Elizabeth.

Hayley Atwell, perhaps. Andrea Risborough would have nailed it.

Hayley Atwell was fantastic in 'Restless' (2012) although the mini-series itself was half-baked.

I liked this, and I watched the whole thing on You Tube. This is really saying something (for me) because I'm pretty idiosyncratic about what I'll sit and watch. I'd really like to see a new adaptation of P&P, but I figured in the meantime I'd take this.

Big issues with this:

Poor Col. Fitzwilliam - I'm certainly not keen on the turn his character takes in this. I also don't like his vying for Georgiana's hand which strikes me as kind of creepy considering that he was a co-guardian with Darcy. I don't know if it would have been viewed similarly at the time.

What was the older Mr. Wickham up to? If Mrs. Younge was George Wickham's sister, then that mean's she was probably the older Wickham's illegitimate daughter. Darcy describe's his father's steward as being "respectable" and characterized by "good conduct". No one's perfect, but I'd always imagined the older Wickham being a really great guy which might be part of the reason the older Darcy had such a soft spot for his son.

Anna Maxwell Martin - I really like AMM, and I enjoyed her in this. I would have liked to have seen someone who better fit my idea of Elizabeth, though. I don't know who that someone would be.

The brood-worthy Darcy back story - Patrick Riley and the improvident great grandfather were a little much. Surely, Darcy would have shared the story of his grandfather at some point with Elizabeth in those 6 years. The Darcy's and the Hardcastle's could have had some kind of political dispute to explain the hard feelings (although having a ghost in the woods is kind of fun).

Stuff I liked:

The other Bennett women: Jenna Coleman was a brilliant Lydia, just a pleasure to watch. I usually just want to strangle Lydia without finding her remotely amusing in adaptations. Rebecca Front was also silly without screeching, a nice change. I thought Jane's little parts were well done also.

Trevor Eve - I'm in the States and haven't seen him in anything. I'm going to make it a point to now.

Matthew Rhys was an excellent Darcy. A little short, as I believe Darcy is supposed to be imposingly tall, but you can't have everything.

Nitpicking:

There should have been one or two little Wickhams running around. If there weren't, Mrs. Bennett would surely be wringing her hands about it.

I agree with that. I really didn't like how they made him into a villain.

I agree with this also. She was an interesting character not used enough.
