Spoiler: part 3

Spoiler

I was sooooo bored and disappointed by the denouement. It all turned out to be an accident?! A really lame one. And then we are so supposed to be anxiously rooting for Lizzie as she dashes through the night carrying the pardon for someone we don't care about in the slightest? No tension whatsoever.

reply

Agreed, I mean was there REALLY anyone chewing their nails to the bones fearing the guy would hang? Of course, they'd safe him at the LAST possible seconde. The only thing more cliché would have been if Darcy had to shoot the rope to prevent him from hanging.

We don't care what happens to Wickham, but the funny thing is, we have to. Just as Darcy had to in the novel, in order to save the Bennet family from social ruin because of Lydia's elopement. Wickham's trial was damaging enough to Pemberley and those who live there; proving Wickham's innocence must have helped them recover most of their footing in society.

Furthermore, how would Darcy have felt if Wickham had been hanged for something he didn't do? Darcy would have felt that deeply, especially in light of his having witnessed, in his youth, the young boy being hanged for poaching.

Yes well I didn't care for Wickham to get hanged but I did care about what would have happened to The Darcy Family after that. It was made pretty clear that t wouldn't have looked very good for them. Thus all the stuff with the great great grandfather who almost lost all of Pemberly and Darcy talking about protecting his family.

And James wrote a great ending in that Darcy never has to see Wickham or Lydia again, unless he travels to the colonies.

LOL, so true.

It sure got cheesy at the end. Almost like they got a twelve year old fanfic writer to come up with it.

I have not read the book, so yes I was very anxious at the end wondering what would happen to Wickham with mixed feelings because he was such a jerk, but was innocent in this case. It was a brilliant choice for the author to have him and the wife move to the colonies, where they both would be out of sight and hopefully out of mind.
