The Pessimistic Farmer

I'm not sure about the farmer who was saying all those bad things to Marty before the memorial. Did the farmer actually exist or was he merely a representation of Marty's personal struggle? Both the high-school coach and the high-school football player who came over to talk to Marty while the farmer was sitting there seemed to notice the farmer too.

I thought it was meant to represent satan, but being martys struggle personified is actually a better theory.

Going by what the book says, no such character existed, nor was there anyone giving Marty the business as this character did. Harrison was hit hard, but the entire community supported the family. I'd say it's meant to be a depiction of Marty's personal struggle coping with the loss. From what's written in the book, Brandon's death hit him far harder than any of them. The book is a very good read.
