who ripped the guy apart more..the bear or the girlfriend?

cause that one scene was terrifying to watch....no...I'm not talking about the bear eating the boyfriend like he was a candy bar....I am talking when the girlfriend unleashed on him a verbal assault that would have sent Alexander the great back home to mommys bosom. the things she said were so cutting and terrible that my face actually turned red on his behalf. I was expecting that song "Im sorry" to start playing after when she was sitting there after hearing he was going to propose to her.

kinda of a weird message in the movie also....it was slight but I kinda picked up on it. like that guide was the guy she should have been with in her mind....he was mysterious and an adventurer...and she obviously liked him at first site as she invited the stranger to eat with her and her boyfriend.

and the boyfriend gets eaten....and she survives and who comes running over to help her? the guide. I just felt that was kinda interesting.

I think the guy had it coming to him. He put her a great danger because of his irresponsibly. He had no map, no orienting skills, he took her cell phone away. Like she said, he was constantly trying to impress her. His jealousy was also a major turn off.

Maybe the message of the movie was that he got what was coming to him, from the GF and the bear.

he did have it coming but i still felt bad for the poor schmuck

LOL! The GF should have ripped him apart!

I don't think he had it coming for him, I wouldn't wish that upon anyone.

He may have been a bit reckless and irresponsible but I don't think he deserved to be mauled to death by a bear because of it. However, I don't think their relationship would have lasted if they both got out alive, there were obvious problems that she had with him and the truth came out when she lost it.

From the beginning I had feelings she didn't love him. The answers she gave on magazine's survey were pointing to she actually didn't like him, even though it's supposed to be a joke. Poor guy, he didn't deserve such girlfriend and of course he didn't deserve to die like that...

Good points.
I felt the same as the topic starter.

I know right? I half expected him to throw the wedding ring off the cliff after that roast. I really sympathized with Alex though, yeah he was way too arrogant, but he did not deserve to be eaten alive by a bear. I think it was clear that he really did love her, which is why he was so intent on giving her the perfect proposal. The fact that he told her to run while the bear was mauling him showed that he truly put her safety above his own.

Well dude was stupid to not have just exited the tent immediatly after seeing the Bear and start making as much notice as possible. Rule is if the Bear comes into your camp area you try to scare it off with lot of loud noises and try to stand tall and be as intimitating as possible. It is the opposite if you enter into a bears grounds, you make as little noise as possible and walk away backwards as slowly as possible to not draw the bears attention. Worse also is to trap yourself in the tent, like a freaking happy meal for the bear with no where to go.

Yeah, the Missy went raw on his ass. I thought he was either gonna jump off the cliff as soon as she called him a loser or he was gonna just leave her ass out there

reply

personally I thought when she called him a *beep* loser that should have showed him she wasnt right for him at all. its times like this where if someone loves you they dont viciously attack you, they rally behind you.

you want to know the person has your back in life. yes, they made up...but quite frankly when he asked her if she really meant that stuff she said...that was beside the point...no matter what she said quite frankly he might as well have been sitting there with 5 arrows sticking out of his back asking if the person who shot him really meant to do it.

I cant see how if he had lived their relationship would have carried on. she took his balls as a man in that scene. it would have been something that would have been always there beneath the surface. but this is neither her nor there...I'm sure backwoods 2 would be how she was recuperating in the hospital with the mysterious camping guide guy feeding her strawberries and chocolate while her boyfriends carcass was buzzing with flies.

SPOILER ALERT!

So since this was based on a true story why did the screenwriter reverse the roles..in the real life the man was the hero who fought off the bear with a knife and fought valiantly to save her life....but in the film she is the hero, he is the wimp who gets them into trouble and cant cope and gets eaten and she has to save herself.

Why have this strange guy who is a guide who lies about growing up in the Forest in Ireland (few trees left in Ireland due to climate and the British deforestation for ship building and land clearing for cattle for British settlers) Hes not credible as a forest guide with his gross manners (urinating in front of them) confronting her bf in an implied violent manner)

Seems two agendas going here, an anti-male (heterosexual) and anti-Irish. Pro feminist?

Thanks for the spoiler alerts. You explained the whole movie in 2 paragraphs....

I wasn't a fan of that moment, and it ruined the entire movie for me, TBH.

The girlfriend was abusive. The boyfriend had done NOTHING to deserve her verbal onslaught. Calling someone you love and will marry a "LOSER"...? Really? That crosses the line. If you're with someone you consider a loser, then the REAL loser has to be you. What kind of a person are you? And to treat any person like that? Really low. If the writer wanted us to hate Jenn, wish granted.

Now, to those who hate the boyfriend, can you really tell me that if the tables were turned, and this was a girl trying to propose to her boyfriend via a trip to the woods, and yes, was a bit insecure, and sure, not getting everything right, but overall was a good person and trying her best to make a moment special, that if things went wrong and the boyfriend blasted HER calling her a total LOSER, that the audience would go, "Yup, he's right. She's a loser." And then cheer her death when the bear strikes? I don't think that would happen with most people who hate the boyfriend.

This movie was a bit too man-hating for me to enjoy.

Jenn was just no one I'd admire. Her boyfriend wasn't perfect but many of his flaws are human flaws. Insecurity??? You mean you can name one person who isn't insecure? Yes, he was jealous and that is something I dislike in men, too, but it's also weird as hell to invite strangers for dinner you meet in the middle of the woods, and also who act territorial and confrontational with your boyfriend.

I hated that whole Alex vs. Guide scene in part because it treated Jenn was just the woman. You sit there and just watch as the "men" have a talk. Really?

Jenn, or any woman, should have felt comfortable enough with BOTH men to stand up and say, "Hey, I have a mouth. I can have a say in this conversation, and you're out of line. I invited you over to dinner. My boyfriend was uncomfortable. Seeing your attitude now, and understanding that you are a stranger to both of us, I'm realizing I made a mistake. You have no right to impose yourself on him or me."

But, you know, it was all the boyfriend's fault. He was weak.

It's not like Jenn started a problem and then did nothing to stop it.

This story played up the guide as a threat and then spun him as a hero at the last minute as though he hadn't acted completely threatening. Just because, "OH NO! BEAR!!" doesn't mean the guide couldn't have been just as bad as a threat left to his own devices with the couple.

I can't imagine any reasonable person in the woods wanting a guide like THAT guy if they were all alone after the way he behaved.

reply

He acted stupid, she called him out. Simple as that.

Maybe not. The audience might forgive such stupidity from a girl, because she is just a girl. Rightly or wrongly. But this doesn't mean that they are wrong to blame the man, it just means they are wrong to forgive it from a girl.
