Question regarding the main plot

Can please somebody tell me why he had to go there to talk to his father, instead of communicating from Earth or if that not possible, at least record the messages and send them to the last station where he went to talk to him eventually.

reply

The movie is really about a person with deep seated father abandonment issues. That plays a large role in the motivation of Pitts character.

reply

I understand the motivation of Pitts character, but not the motivation of NASA or whoever for spending a lot of money to send him there.

reply

They thought that his voice would get his father to respond. NASA probably never seriously thought of sending him there, which is why he highjacked the rocketship.

I see what you are saying, why did he have to leave Earth to record?

I have no good answer, perhaps the secret nature of the mission, more likely it is for the viewer.

The moon car chase was pretty cool and new.

reply

He communicated from Mars because that was the last secure place there was to talk to Neptune. And, the mission, without Pitt, is supposed to be going there for one purpose: Kill his father and the Lima station. Period.

That's why Pitt stows away: To stop them from doing both, if there is another option. And, we find out that the pulses hitting earth were not intentional.

reply

So ... they could have just launched a missile at it.

reply

Billions of miles is a heck of a way to go, hoping that your missile hits that tiny target.

reply

Space man

They were just too lazy to use encryption and have a laser transmitter orbiting earth. Everyone but the cinematographers should be fired from this project.

reply

Especially the data security piece you mentioned - why did he have to go to Mars to complete a sound recording ... why couldn't they just send it to Mars from Earth.

Then there is the fact that they could have just launched a heap of missles at the ship ... and done it years ago.
