Unspeakably BAD

Boring. Boring. BORING.

Basically nothing happens. It’s dreadful. A total waste of 2 hours.

I saw Double Toasted's review last night. They said the same thing, that it was very boring, with underwritten characters. I believe them, because I notice that every movie trying to emulate 2001: A Space Odyssey does that. They make their movies a long, slow ass slog. Even the first Star Trek movie did it. Doesn't make sense. What made 2001 a great movie were the visuals, not the fact that it was sloooooooowwwww.

The strange thing is that the film does feel like it moves slowly, but objectively speaking the plot actually develops at a fairly rapid pace.

I think that the soundtrack actually contributes a lot to the feeling of slowness.

reply

Unspeakably? But you are speaking.

Aka at a loss for words...other than “this sucked”.

I knew walking out that it would be a polarizing film. It's not exactly what one would call a "crowd pleaser."

With that said, I enjoyed it. Yes, it's a subdued film that requires some patience to get through, but after the first half hour I was engaged and interested to see where it was going.

On a technical level, it's a masterpiece. The effects are wonderful, with lots of practicals, and when CGI is used it's well-done. Also, the production design is excellent.

James Gray's films aren't for everybody. I also saw The Lost City of Z and it was similar, in that it was a very cerebral, deliberately paced film.

Ad Astra is not as good as I hoped it would be, but it's certainly not a bad film either. I do not regret going to see it.

It's interesting simply for the fact that it's not about fucking comic book cartoon characters.

reply

Couldn’t tell you. I don’t watch that crap.

agreed
