Rebels homage to novel Lost Tribe of the Sith?

Just started Rebels and was watching Wings of the Master, and couldn't help but notice the similarities between the planet they land on to get the B-Wing and the planet the Sith tribe crashed on in the book Lost Tribe of the Sith.

It's been awhile since I read it so I don't remember much, but I do recall them needing to land on this gas giant which ended up having massive stone pillars (I'm pretty sure both even used 'forest of stone pillars' or something similar), losing power in the atmosphere, seeing all the crashed ships in Rebels, and the winged creatures on the planet, possibly the same winged creature Yaru Korsin saw a few times.

I dunno, I guess Thrawn will be in the series after all, so it didn't seem THAT unlikely this could be another nice homage to the SWEU...

A little late to respond but there's a fine line that this Nu-canon is walking. It's either legitimate homage or straight ripoff. I feel like the inclusion of any Legend continuity characters, settings and plot threads are disingenuous with the whole idea of what the new canon was supposed to be; a blank slate for authors and filmmakers to come up with their own material. Any inclusion of Legends material just says to me, " I can't come up with my own stuff, so I'll just use this pre-existing, proven thing but change it around a bit so it's not a blatant ripoff.

It should be noted that most of the re-introduced stuff is actually completely different.
While the Inquisitorius was present in the EU, it was, well, an inquisition. They spent their time interogating and torturing to get confessions. Some of them were Force Sensitive but most weren't trained or equipped with a lightsaber.
Same goes with Malachor. Sure, there was a Malachor system in the EU, it was central to Kotor 2, but I don't remember the Malachor in Rebels being a shattered planet, held together by the Dark Side more than actual physics.
Or even Thrawn, who looks almost nothing like his EU self.

So in many ways, it's actually "I'm coming up with my own stuff but orders from above said that this character was popular so let's use him as a template, because his name will sell."

If the Season 3 trailer is any indication, Wedge's origin story is also completely different.

So wait are you two saying this was, or wasn't a reference to the book? Or are you saying it is but it's not an homage it's a rip off? I don't know if it was close enough to be a rip off, but definitely some striking similarities.

I personally don't think it was either an hommage or a rip-off.
The way Kesh looks isn't unique, even within the official canon and the Legends canon (See Cato Nemoida in Clone Wars and ROTS, Makeb in Rise of the Hutt Cartel...).
If they wanted the planet in Rebels to be Kesh, it would have been called Kesh.
In addition to that, Kesh actually look like this:

It's just one part of the planet while the Rebels planet seems to be entirely like this.

Well I know it's definitely not the same planet, but a reference to. Who knows why they wouldn't make it Kesh, I can think of at least a dozen reasons, a lot of which are simply legal issues...

I'm not saying you're wrong, but the images you posted are as you said just a part of Kesh, while the description in the book of where they crashed in these mountains was far more similar to the other image you posted, which is what the Rebels episode made me think of.

And then it's also not just the scenery, but the flying creature outside the windows and the fact in Rebels various crashed spaceships could be seen as they were flying in.

It could just be coincidence, but that's a pretty interesting coincidence imo.

They never said it's a blank slate. They can choose to use or not use whatever they want from the old canon.
