If the cop from the end of part 1
would have just shot himself then and there, he could have ended the whole thing right there. He knew how to end the curse with their investigating, so he's a coward.
shareEither that or killed Lewis and maybe even himself to be sure. I didn't get the logic behind what he planned to do (i.e. continue to carry on the curse through someone else).
