Great movie, but...
it felt more like a spin-off than a sequel, as it didn't take the story any further. it's basically a rehash of the original with a different protagonist.

shareThe protagonist and her journey was quite different than the first movie.
It's hardly Jason in Camp Crystal Lake again or Die Hard in an Airport.
Not sure how a rehash of the original can be considered a spin off. It's either close or it's not.
The original story was told and the lead died. This movie opened following another character who then died moving the story to a new host.
This opened the doors for a fresh story.
We got to know a little bit more about the lore, if the narrator was honest, because I'm not sure if the guy helping her was even real.
like "fear the walking dead", for instance - same scenario as in the original series, but a different location and new characters...
shareBut the other characters from Walking Dead were still alive.
With Smile the last movies characters died so there is no where left to follow them other than the morgue.
This is a continuation of the demons path.
Character from last movie dies and passes it to the drug dealer kid.
Drug dealer kid passes it to the protagonist of this movie.
She dies so her story is wrapped up as well.
It's not a spin off at all. It is a continuation.
There is no hope. You don't escape death. You don't get to have a sequel.
the protagonist here (even though an interesting character) is just another part of the "passing the trauma" chain. there have been many people before (and each of them could theoretically have their own prequel movie, following the same pattern as smile 1+2).
smile 3 will probably be the actual continuation of the story that takes things to the next level as now there are many simultaneous chains - let's see what parker finn makes of it.
I agree, the next one needs another development in the story and a better fight back. Maybe even a survivor.
We almost got it with the helping man in this film, but that was a rug pull, showing the audience that it is a hopeless situation, you cannot win, and you can't survive.
If the protagonist actually told anybody what was going on and booked herself into a hospital to be strapped onto a bed for a few days so she can't kill herself.
She had all the pieces to the puzzle.
You will kill yourself.
You have 5 days to live.
Not like she didn't have the cash to make it happen.
"This opened the doors for a fresh story."
But they wont really be *fresh* will they? They are just retreading everything with nothing new. It's like LOST, you will never get a satisfying ending. They will churn these out until it becomes a meme and a joke of a franchise, think SAW I-XI.
It will become nothing more than a vehicle to line the pockets of sleazy hollywood type producers while doing the bare minimum to make something compelling for the audience. These procucers dont care if something is good as long as they have control of the IP. Havent people been discussing this issue for the last 7 or 8 years with the atrocity of the Marvel Universe, Star Wars, Indiana Jones, ect.?
In anime, that's what we call a FILLER. This whole movie is a filler, a big money-grabber filler. Great production, talented actress, but a very poor movie, with almost no story. Basically just a series of hallucinations until the final scene.
shareI thought Naomi was really good. She has some acting chops and convincingly sold what could’ve been a largely forgettable movie. She plays the “girl losing her mind” bit really well.
Off the subject, but Willa Fitzgerald in Strange Darling was amazing in a similar downward-spiral sense.
💯 but in addition the cinematography and overall directing really allowed her bare focused screen time to do just that..really amazing screen presence. i thought that was unique for this style movie. the king /queen of downward spiral for me at present is probably jennifer lawrence's Mother and kirsten dunst's Melancholia. it's too bad i couldn't get into strange darling.. i tried and it was quite artfully made
