Cigarettes

Kate did a lot of smoking in this movie. Unfortunately, she was smoking filter-tipped cigarettes, which were not available in Australia in 1951.

So you have found a factual flaw. Has that stopped you enjoying the movie? I noticed in 'Australia' there were many factual flaws, like Hugh's toothbrush for instance, but it certainly didn't stop me loving the movie. I loved this movie btw.

It was a good movie. There were probably other factual flaws, but I didn't pick them up. I was just crowing that I managed to pick this one up.

The one thing I had difficulty with was the age gap between Kate and Liam. He would probably not have been born at the time she left town.

Truth is (and I'm Australian but I honestly don't follow movie stars and/or the like these days) - unless they're from "my" day (I'm 46), I thought a similar thing about Kate & Liam's age difference - not during the movie, mind you, as I honestly didn't know how old Liam was until I looked it up and found out there's actually a 14-15 year age difference between him & Kate (with her being 39-40 when the movie was made and he being 24-25). However, having said that, I think they made a good couple on screen & I didn't even NOTICE an age difference. On realising just how young Liam actually IS though, the line in the film, something about in relation to him last seeing Tilly "...I haven't seen her since she was a kid" made me think "Well if there WAS supposed to be such an age difference between them, it wouldn't make sense as he wouldn't have even been born, let alone remember her". However, I haven't read the book & I don't know whether there WAS supposed to be an age difference - that line, however (if in the book) would lead you to believe they are MEANT to be about the same age. Still, I don't think they looked out of place as a couple... and honestly, it's nice to see an older woman with a younger man for a change! :)

I'm an Aussie too and I noticed that the Golden Fleece bowser reads 'cents per gallon'. In 1951? No, not yet.
