Excellent film

I saw an advanced screening of this earlier in the year (while it was far from complete - no CGI or anything at that stage) to be part of an audience feedback session. I went in with utter trepidation as it sounded like a chick-flick - but my fiance insisted. All I can say is, make sure you go and see this, it was genuinely brilliant. Kate Winslet is fantastic, but Hugo Weaving steals the show in my opinion.

I can't comment on whether or not it does the book justice or if there are glaring discrepancies as I had never even heard of it prior to seeing the film; however, as a stand-alone film, I cannot give it enough praise. We'll definitely be going to see the finished product on release.

You think The Dressmaker can be up for awards

reply

It's hard to say. I don't pay a lot of attention to awards to be able to give you an informed opinion, but it is worthy of recognition in my opinion.

reply

Thank you so much for sharing this information. I have another question if you don't mind.

Did you find Kate Winslet believable in the role of a glamorous dressmaker?

And also, does she look much older than the rest of the people who are supposed to be her own age (but are actually much younger, like Hemsworth and Sarah Snook)?

reply

Kate Winslet is definitely believable - she has an aura of elegance about her in this film; she has a genuine presence in every scene and definitely feels like the glamorous outsider.

Unfortunately yes, there was a noticeable age gap between the characters. She is still a very good looking woman, but she kind of looks like the glamorous older sister... not the same age.

Do you think Winslet and Hemsworth have a good chemistry on the screen? Are they believable as a couple?

reply

Well, it is particularly believable given the lack of alternatives in the town for both of them! But seriously, yes they do have some chemistry... they're not an on-screen couple that will be remembered forever - but they are believable and the viewer does get emotionally invested in their relationship.

reply

Can you say more about the film? Mainly the performances and overall tone of the film.

reply

The film was well paced and developed the characters nicely to the point where you're emotionally invested; it was engrossing dramatically and had the right amount of genuine humour. It really conveyed a realistic atmosphere of a remote Australian town. Again, it is subject to editing because a lot of the feedback they asked for was for pacing etc.

The standout performances were certainly Kate Winslett, Hugo Weaving and Judy Davis. Liam Hemsworth is very likable in it but I am not his biggest fan in general. I'm struggling to remember the performances of more of the supporting cast because it was a few months ago, but all I can say is I remember leaving thinking how well it was cast and directed.

Does go into the death of her baby? as well as her mother's death which the town doctor not bothering to help her which results in her burning the town down. Final question: Does the real bitchy woman Buela accidently get the radio thrown at her?

reply

Yes her mother's death is a prominent part of the film at the end. As for the death of the baby and the radio, I honestly can't recall, which probably means if they were included they didn't get much screen time; although for some reason I am having a vague memory of something about a baby now that you mentioned it... I should have posted on here straight after seeing the movie (I think it was in March) to be of more help - but I was only prompted when seeing the trailer the other day. Apologies.

reply

How did Teddy (Liam Hemsworth) die in the film?

reply

He jumped into the silo that was full of something different to when he usually went in there (can't remember what) and he suffocated.

reply

It was sorghum, and he was expecting wheat

reply

It is a weird film. One of the weirdest I've seen.A tale of passion and revenge.A psychological drama with western overtones. Also,it is more than a bit, funny. The seamstresses come into town like Eastwood and Bronson. The script could have been written by Jane Austen,Agatha Christie and Edgar Allan Poe.But it wasn't.Cate metamorphoses from her lovely self into...Meryl Streep-at her wickedest. In this flick there is ALWAYS something kinky going on.It is Dogpatch,Australia on acid.
Absolutely well worth a watch!

I'm really looking forward to this movie, not only because I really like Kate Winslet, but also because it's an Aussie film and I really like Judy Davis as an actress, she's so talented, both her and Kate are. The trailer looks promising too...and I like watching movies and romance stories about older women with younger men, Kate with Liam Hemsworth is a pairing that's worth checking out! 

Cool.

I couldn't agree more, I just saw it and was struck by how much it exceeded my expectations. Well worth a watch indeed.

I agree, great film. But I thought Judy Davis was the real revelation.
