Would be better with better director
Not bad, but a bit weird.
Sometimes comedy, sometimes drama.Mixed not very well.
I believe that even the director was confused.

No, this movie is truth to the book written by Rosalie Ham. The story is bizarre and a mix of comedy and drama.
shareI agree with the OP.
Mixing comedy with drama is great. But, does it have to be done in such a goofy and slapstick way?
It's like the comedy elements in it were directed with the average Alabama native in mind. You can be funny, damn funny, without that appeal-to-the-lowest-common-denominator vibe which this director saw fit to blanket those parts with. We've seen brilliantly executed comedy/drama before many times. Jocelyn Moorhouse was just way too over-the-top with it in many parts. Other parts though, were done very well. Why so inconsistent, Jocelyn? Get it together, woman! Or it's back to the Emu farm for you!
It's a good film, which could have been a great film, in the right hands.
Scott Hicks perhaps.
Moorehouse is a bit of a mixed bag of a director, Hicks could have provided a more refined approach to this IMO but the film was still memorable.
'Buffalo hunting? I've gone buffalo huntin'? What the *beep* does that mean? Buffalo huntin'!'
