Why make Dungatar look like a US Western town ?

Having grown up in the far north of Victoria I was surprised by the way they made Dungatar look. No stone buildings (I guess they needed that for the ending), not enough live trees, ... Then I found this under Trivia.

The fictional town of Dungatar was built from scratch as no town in Victoria, Australia, matched production designer Roger Ford's wish to achieve a Western town with Australian characteristics.

Does anyone have any idea why he wanted to do this ? It jarred with me. But I guess it might have appealed to the US market.

Also there is no train from Hay to Ouyen to Birchip to Melbourne. But you definitely have to be a local to know that.

I did like the name though. Nearly as good as Porpoise Spit.
