Why the "Earth Gun" to shoot 'em ?

I liked this movie a lot ... if only because I had no idea where it was leading, and the subtle prompts and red herrings trying to drag you in the wrong direction. Just one thing......Why would Damon need an Earth weapon (i.e. a hand gun in a case) to kill the naughty pre-abducted dwellers of the "Truman Show" ? Oh, hang on... if he had killed them with a Ray Gun, then the audience (Us) would have caught on that Morpheus was a bogie. Sorry, answered me own question.

An alien race of organic machines whose bodies are capable of the longevity required for intergalactic travel and whose minds by nature of their longevity, have the time needed to reason that weapons are a mute point when simply leaving a violently primitive race on its rock to become extinct is the only response required from their encounter, will only find a weapon when it is from the rock of such a race.. ours in the case of this particular encounter. He uses an earth gun because earth is the nearest place with a weapon.
