Or was he actually on earth until he broke through some barrier and got transported to the spaceship?

b) the movie suggests (to me at least) that at least the outside of the facility was an illusion. their inability to find a straight road out points to that as well, so at least after the "abduction" nic is on the space station, and not on earth.
