Damon says he can't protect them up there. Does this indicate he was different from the alien (seen earlier) and was in fact an abductee with his brain partially replaced as shown at the end? Also, who was it that was shot straight up in the air early in the abduction - the girl?
My impression is that Damon was a construct created by (or part of) the alien intelligence. I thought his statement about being unable to protect them was a) a lack of certainty about their newfound powers would fully manifest and b) the fact that the actual humans up there were mostly nuts.
Last question first. It was Haley, or we are to assume it was Haley, as she was the only other person there, that we know of, anyway.
I assumed Damon making that statement was just to try and control the situation. I think he knew that no one up there could really hurt him.
As for Damon being an abductee, I don't believe he was. I think he was one of the aliens and the face on him was actually either a real human face transplanted on him, or a synthetic face. Either way, it was another form of control.
Remember, the seemingly ridiculous questions Damon was asking Nic actually make sense as he was attempting to determine what effect the alien technology had on the human body system. All of the human body system, physical, mental and everything in between. Could he talk, could he move other limbs, could he do someone complex computations in his mind. Obviously, the alien technology worked, and then some.
What I am having a hard time figuring out is why the other humans in the desert were such whack jobs. Perhaps they were part of previous experiments that actually did affect the mind, and that's why they are doing what they are doing with the three, then two, that they have...to see if they can improve on their design.
The one other thing I can't figure out...why the pistol? Why did Damon carry that pistol around in a briefcase like that? Surely with the technology these aliens have, they have other ways of killing someone in a less brutal fashion. The gun was just odd. To use it to keep the three in check would make sense, but not the whackos.
Sorry, I know I tried to answer your questions, then just posed more, but this movie is actually pretty intriguing. I think it's a little underrated.

Kayfabe.
It may be dead in wrestling but the aliens obviously respect kayfabe; you die with the con.
The only time they broke character was at the end when he broke through the simulation and at that point it didn't make sense to keep the ruse going. But I suspect that the protocols for the simulation were to maintain kayfabe at all times.

Kayfabe might make sense if he were carrying the gun around on him, like in a holster, but with keeping it hidden away until he used it, the ruse doesn't really matter because the people would be dead anyway.
He never showed, or even aimed it, to threaten someone. He only used it with immediate effect, so the ruse of the human made pistol wasn't necessary.
And something else I just thought of. Have you ever seen someone in a bio suit carrying a briefcase? The whole thing is very odd.
Maybe it's just something he was trying to emulate with regard to humans, only with this, he got it wrong.
I too would like to think there was more to this movie then on the surface. Why bother experimenting on them in the first place? I find it interesting how they lure them in the first place, and I think nomad points it out how the group in fact came seeking him, or'them,' out. Not that they wanted it, but you play with fire, you get burned. But forget what nick wanted, what did the aliens want???
I too was also thinking the people up top were failed experiments, but they didn't have any hardware. So then what other experiments were they doing?
And lastly the zoom out at the very end shows the solar system they in. nick was stationed in a literal earth-like research station. Does this alien race intend to make weapons out of us?
People in biosuits often carry cases because that's where they may have testing equipment or medical supplies. In this case, Damon carried a case that had a revolver.
Cases, sure, but not briefcases. Not something that can't be cleaned or decontaminated easily. Leather would be awful to try to keep clean in a bio situation. I've seen in news stories and documentaries and such where people in bio suits are carrying bags or cases that are specific to the job, holding whatever it is that they are holding, but I've never once seen anyone in a bio suit carrying a leather briefcase.

I don't think Damon was an abductee. He is probably a sentient Alien robot designed to test human abductees in an earth-like habitat. So are his team. The suit they were wearing was not to protect them from contamination but to hide their robotic body structure during the test. He removes his helmet in the end to imply that the particular test that he was doing came to an end.
