Scene where she tells Mom about her pregnancy

Liked the movie, but when Donna tells her mom she's pregnant, it played like the mom already knew because Mom had hardly any reaction to the news. Wouldn't the first thing a mom would ask is, "Who's the father?" Even the most understanding mom would show more of a reaction. Donna's mom had more emotion when Donna told her about the bookstore closing, which eliminated Donna's job.

Why would her mother ask who the father was? She stated that she was planning to have an abortion so the identity of the father is inconsequential to her mother. Her mother was relieved because she was worried that Donna was going to tell her she was moving to LA, which would have been worse news.

Our society constantly reinforces the idea that getting pregnant is the worst thing that can happen to a single young woman. Her mother's reaction was realistic because in reality getting pregnant and having an abortion isn't that big of a deal. Many woman have had them and it doesn't have to be a choice that defines the rest of your life.

Yes, you have a good point. But my comment had nothing to do with the subject of abortion. My comment had to do with the mom's non-reaction to a daughter who was so terribly upset. Story-wise, Mom's reaction would have made sense if the mom had already known about the pregnancy. But she had not even a hint of surprise, which didn't seem credible.

I enjoyed the Mother's reaction. Being a comedy, the film has the ability to play with the viewer's situational expectations.

In this case, we all expect the Mother to demand answers. I appreciated a different take; specifically, I feel that the Mother saw how upset her Daughter was, and shifted to a more nurturing reaction.

In her head the Mother may have been freaking out (or at least curious). However, having been through this situation before, she knew what her Daughter needed - understanding and reassurance.

Eh, i think it was meant to show you that despite being a business-oriented bitch, she was still Donna's mother, and this was an area where the two of them (who obviously had trouble connecting throughout the film) FINALLY had some common ground, as it turns out that her mother had had an abortion when she was young, as well.

I think it was a very well-written and well-acted scene.

Agree with the OP on this one. That scene was weak and unconvincing. Was the mother that shallow to only be concerned with Donna moving away. Donna was upset and needed someone to talk with.

What puzzled me was why moving to LA would have been so terrible. Was that supposed to have been a joke?

Probably because she doesn't want her daughter to move to the other side of the continent. I'm guessing the mom was thinking that Donna might have gotten some kind of job in the entertainment business there.

Which would have been great for Donna, considering how rare and fought-over those kind of jobs are. Mom just struck me as massively overreacting to the possibility of her baby bird *finally* leaving the nest.

Every parent reacts differently. When I told my mother that I was pregnant it went EXACTLY like it did in this movie, which is why the scene had me bawling like a baby. I think you were expecting the more stereotypical, hollywood cliche reaction, but this movie was very realistic and not so over the top dramatic.

See, i'm a guy but had a similar experience with my parents when I told them that I had unexpectedly knocked up the girl i was dating.

I was terrified to tell my parents, and was stunned when I got a very milquetoast, non-critical response. In fact i believe i just got thanked for letting them know and then they hung up the phone.
