Was the character supposed to be an unfunny comic, or do they actually think this is good material?
I have no issue with the rest of the movie, even though it let me down as often as it worked well, but I can't tell what tone they were going for with Donna's act. Jenny Slate is a talented performer, so…not sure what the deal is here.

Most of it was very funny, except for the part where she was not trying to be funny, when she was upset.

Now, I will say that I don't usually find bodily function type humor that funny and that seemed to be half her act, but even her first round of standup when she wasn't stressed seemed awkward and not that funny. I would think it was just me except that they showed the audience not reacting much either. It left me wondering if she was supposed to be not that great and going nowhere.

I'm glad no one made a big deal of how "talented" her character was, it helped me just kind of accept the characters and story without judging them. Even though her character was super annoying for the first two thirds.
It reminded me of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel". She was not funny at all. She just got up on the stage and babbled about her pathetic existence for five or ten minutes. For every comedian we see make it to "The Tonight Show" there must be about ten thousand sad, unfunny wannabes at those depressing little clubs.
