Explain to me why Israel gets to compete in a European tournament.

reply

because the religion of peace would leave car bombs outside the stadium, but interesting you don't question why azerbaijan does?

very telling...

reply

Azerbaijan is transcontinental. It's located between Eastern Europe and West Asia.

reply

So like Israel.

reply

Israel is Asian and counts as the Middle East. Israel shouldn't be playing in Europe.

reply

So like Azerbaijan.

reply

The Middle East isn't a continent. Israel only counts as being part of Asia.

reply

So like Azerbaijan.

reply

No because officially Azerbaijan could be considered in two different continents (Europe and Asia). The only continent that Israel is a part of is Asia.

reply

Azerbaijan is not in two different continents. It's in one.

Hope that helps.

reply

Azerbaijan is considered both European and Asian owing to its unique location on both continents.

https://emilyembarks.com/is-azerbaijan-in-europe/

reply

Nope.

And also... a European style liberal democracy in the middle east. Hmm, what might one call that?

reply

The Republic of Azerbaijan is a country in the Caucasus area in South-Eastern Europe and South-West Asia. The country lies between the two continents of Asia and Europe

The continents of Asia and Europe lie close to each other with no definitive boundaries, and this has led to some countries being transcontinental.

https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/how-much-of-azerbaijan-is-in-europe.html

According to this convention, the following states have territory in both Asia and Europe.

Azerbaijan is a country located mainly on the Asian portion of the Caucasus, with a small portion of the country, its Qusar, Shabran, Siazan, Khachmaz and Quba districts north of the Greater Caucasus Watershed, and thus in Europe, placing a population of about half a million (or c. 5% of the country's total population) in Europe.

Azerbaijan is a former Soviet republic in the Caucasus and is variously considered part of Europe or Asia.

reply

LOL. You didn't answer the question.

And still... no.

And further more... France is transcontinental

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_Guiana

reply

By accepting France as a transcontinental state, you indicate that you know what a transcontinental state is -- it's a state that holds territories on two or more continents -- so on what grounds are you dismissing the geographical convention of Azerbaijan being a transcontinental state? And on what grounds are you claiming Israel as one?

In short: what do you imagine you're talking about?

reply

LOL France is not a transcontinental state.

Thanks for playing.

reply

Yes. It is. France treats all of its overseas territories politically as departments of France. As far as France is concerned, it's all France.

It's just not a contiguous transcontinental state like Azerbaijan is.

Just saying 'no' to facts doesn't alter them.

reply

France is a country in Europe.

I can only do so much to help you.

reply

And sadly nothing at all to help yourself. You're boring now.

reply

And yet you're still here.

Enjoy your next trip to the famously South American nation of France.

reply

Well, I was rather hoping that you might take up the invitation to explain yourself. I'll repeat it one last time:

on what grounds are you dismissing the geographical convention of Azerbaijan being a transcontinental state? And on what grounds are you claiming Israel as one?

I'll also remind you that contradicting factual information isn't compelling nor does it constitute conversation or debate. You're currently behaving like a toddler who gets carried away saying 'no' to everything as if it's some sort of power of self-assertion. Let's see if you can do better than a toddler this time around...

reply

Still here despite your boredom. Curious.

When you book your flight to the South America paradise known as Paris, remember to visit the big pylon. Breathtaking views.

reply

Let's see if you can do better than a toddler this time around...

Oh, you couldn't. Fair enough. Have a nice day.

reply

Thanks, I will.

Enjoy wiping the tears away.

Hey, maybe a trip to South America will cheer you up. I recommend France.

reply

Although Israel is not geographically located in Europe, it is a member in many European transnational federations and frameworks, and takes part in many European sporting events and the Eurovision Song Contest.

reply

Explain to me how Australia gets to appear in the Eurovision Song Contest?

reply

Every year? Maybe it's invitational like how the Copa America takes a random foreign country.

reply

I donโ€™t make the rules โ˜น๏ธ

reply

I actually know the answer to that one. They're an associate member of something called The European Broadcast Union (which organises Eurovision). Membership makes them eligible to participate in Eurovision. Actually lots of countries outside of Europe are members of that organisation, but they don't want to participate. But Australia does, because they're as camp as Christmas.

As for Israel in the Euros -- it's because they took the ball to their neighbours and said 'Wanna play?' and their neighbours said their mum wouldn't let them.

reply

Explain to me how Tottenham is considered one of the big 6.

reply

They will be once their application to join the Swiss Super League has been approved.

(They still won't win a trophy.)

reply

The Swiss league is too high for them.

reply

Why does Australia play in the Asian competitions? ๐Ÿค”

I barely follow football/soccer and I'm pretty sure I know the answer to both of these: level of play and ๐Ÿ’ฒ๐Ÿ’ฒ

Israel is actually because the AFC kicked them out and FIFA didn't want them to automatically qualify for the World Cup, so they let them compete in the European qualifiers.

From what I've heard, having Israel compete in UEFA has been good for business and the sport.

reply

Yeah. Level of play and money. Australia used to be in the Oceania Football Confederation, which was only founded because Australia and New Zealand were denied entry to the Asian Football Confederation, so they got to play against teams from the Cook Islands and Tuvalu and places like that. And obviously they used to just smash them. And then they'd step up to meet a larger footballing nation and get smashed themselves. It wasn't competitive or useful to the development of the sport.

reply

How shit, I just read your comment and it's exactly what I thought. I wonder what the groups were like back then. Was it one really large for competition, or did they have a few groups and hope they didn't get grouped with Australia and New Zealand?

reply

I never paid it any attention. I'm not sure how it was organised.

I remember Australia beating the Solomon Islands something like 13 or 14 - 0 in the qualifiers for one of the World Cups, late 90s or early 2000s. I think that was one of the results that made people think 'Oh, OK, maybe you should play with the Asian countries.'

It must have been like when Germany or Spain finds themselves in a group with Andorra or San Marino. Just... pointless.

reply

Sounds similar to the movie coming out later this year.

Ha. I didn't know about that. Not sure how that result escaped my attention all these years. Seems to have its own Wikipedia page: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Australia_31%E2%80%930_American_Samoa

You know it's bad when your match result has its own Wikipedia page.

reply

What matters is that they had fun.

reply

And now they get to see themselves played in a comedy movie and have that fun all over again.

reply

Capuchin answered above. But Before that answer, I assumed because Australia is its own continent, they needed to be placed somewhere as they can't play themselves. I guess you could throw them in Oceania, even though it's not a continent, but Australia and New Zealand would dominate the other countries and there would be too many teams for a group.

I have nothing against Israel, I just always found it weird that they played in European competitions rather than Asian ones.

reply

Well now how about you explain why Toronto FC plays in MLS?!?!!!

reply

It's Major League Soccer and so Toronto being totally major, it goes without saying. Screw Montreal and Vancouver though. They're my enemies and they'll never be major.

reply

LOL nice.

Is MLS considered a higher level of play than the Canadian Premier league?

reply

Absolutely. The Canadian Premier League just started in 2019 and only has 8 teams. Most of the teams have weird names and I don't even know where they're located. Like, where the hell do Cavalry FC, Forge FC, Pacific FC and Valour FC even play?

reply

LOL that's kind of hilarious. I had no idea it just started.

It's wild to me, as an American, that MLS, along with Liga MX, is generally considered the top level of play in CONCACAF, because when I was growing up in the 80's and 90s not many people liked soccer here. It started changing in the late 90s. Still, I always imagined Canada would be miles ahead of us in the game.

I guess since your three major cities are in MLS that technically USA, Canada, and Mexico are top level play for CONCACAF. A giant superleague could be cool.

reply

MLS and Liga MX would never agree to a superleague unless Liga MX agrees to add a salary cap or MLS agrees to remove their salary cap. That's why Liga MX teams keep dominating the CONCACAF Champions League.

reply

Yeah I've heard Liga MX would never do it. There's the salary cap and also just regular labor law differences between the two countries that make it almost impossible for it to happen.

reply

Wouldn't Mexican teams continue to dominate it for some time anyway? Soccer is Mexico's biggest sport -- they're a traditional soccer nation.

Until MLS reached a point where they could start offering salaries equivalent to those of the more popular US sports, talented young athletes who play several different sports as kids (including soccer) will continue to pursue careers in the more profitable ones when they get old enough.

Right?

reply

Yeah I think until MLS can match the salaries of the other leagues, top athletes that play multiple sports will probably continue to go to those. MLS is rapidly rising in popularity here though, so that might not be as distant as it seems.

As for Mexican clubs versus U.S. clubs, I don't follow it closely enough to say for sure, but my intuition leads me to think that yes Mexican clubs would likely dominate.

reply

It's the same here. Fans are occasionally shocked to find out that some professional football players aren't especially big fans of football. They just happen to be very good at it. They might have played a bit of cricket or rugby or whatever as kids and preferred those sports, but there's -- comparatively speaking -- no money in that.
