Please stop painting houses grey.

Or does everyone want to live in a state prison?

reply

You have to keep it simple when flipping...bold is always a risk.

reply

There are a lot of other neutral colors besides grey. Just getting sick of it.

reply

Me too. Joanna Gaines on Fixer Upper has the same grey paint fixation, as does the designer Property Brother albeit to a somewhat lesser extent. Those 2 shows are catering to specific clients and shouldn't be worrying about neutral wall colors. It's becoming bizarre.

reply

Agree, grey is being used by a lot of the American fixer upper shows these days. I've been watching Flip or Flop for over a year and it is kind of monotonous now because the end of each flip is basically the same colour tones. I don't agree that you can't risk bolder colours on walls. I have different colours on all my walls and when visitors come in, they are pleasantly surprised. Down here in Oz, a lot of property developers use magnolia off white in ALL new homes. BORING.

reply

Obviously you don't live in the Emerald City. Quadling Land, perhaps?

Boo Hoo! Let me wipe away the tears with my PLASTIC hand!--Lindsey McDonald (Angel)

reply

Well then tell all the other flippers and homeowners to please stop painting houses beige. I've had a few decades to get sick of beige in Orange County. I think a few years of grey houses isn't so bad by comparison.

I was just watching an episode from season 4 and Christina was pissed because they grey paint she wanted for the outside ended up being blue. She was acting like it was the worst color choice ever, and all I could think was how charming it made the house look. I liked the blue. Then she got her way, and repainted it grey. Then my thought was that it looked like a prison. Horrible. But they insisted it was better. Not at all.

Here's the blue "mistake":

And this is how they ended up repainting it:

Is it just me?

reply

I'm not a big fan of blue. But I think the blue looks a lot more inviting. The grey is just so drab. Sometimes grey works with color accents to make it pop. But this is just ZZZZZZZ.......

reply

I like navy or a darker blue. I don't think a light blue would look good on the outside of a house. I'm not against the grey. I'm currently painting a room grey, but like you said, you need a pop of color with it. I'm painting a room grey and yellow now. They should have painted the shutters a different color. The black shutters make it look so drab.

reply

California houses tend to call for lighter colors because of the warmer climate. Darker colors heat the house unnecessarily.

Plus, stucco walls just don't look right in darker colors.

Sounds amazing! I think of it in menswear terms: Grey = suit or predominant color of house. White = shirt or trim. Pop of color = tie or front door or shutters.

I like that analogy...Brilliant!

I remember in 1 episode in season 2 they painted a house in an olive green colour on the outside and it looked quite nice...there may have been other houses that they've painted in other colours. But yes, it seems like grey is their usual default colour of choice...with probably only a few exceptions.

HGTV: HOME GREY TELEVISION; Since there aren't gardening shows anymore and all the shows paint the houses grey inside and out!

reply

I remember when they painted our high school gray. They did it to break our spirits.
