No way the people who show up to the open houses can afford to buy


They are clearly using extras for the open houses. None of them look like they can afford to buy a dog house, let alone some of the 500k+ houses they show. It's so funny to watch them try to sell to a single mom in sweatpants with 2 dirty kids in tow. They are using the cheapest extras they can find and it shows.

I've never seen a mom with two dirty kids before. You also need to never judge a book by the cover!

But seriously, I agree that the 'potential buyers' are extras with scripted lines. I say that because they almost always comment about features in the house that were spotlighted during the flip. I wonder where they get their extras? Maybe they just ask neighbors if they want to be on television when the neighbors come around looking at the show being produced?

It's a fun show, I don't take it too seriously but in the cold Minnesota winters, it's nice to be able to turn on the DVR and see a nice warm sunny place once in a while.

There are casting agencies in southern California (and elsewhere) that specialize in providing extras. And many extras are members of the Screen Actors Guild, which is an actor's union.

Trust me, these hotel maids who show up with their fatherless kids, they aren't getting these kinds of mortgages approved on TANF.

They must be using "Extras".
Especially when the Extras will make comments about the area of the home that was the focus of the renovation.
But still, it's a fun show to watch.

I know this is being judgemental, but I always say the same thing. A trashy looking mom and 4 kids are looking at the 650k 3 bedroom home. Really? Then again they also say that 450K homes are great starter homes.

And don't forget that these people could always take out a mortgage to buy these homes, so it's not entirely "impossible" that these people are potential buyers.

I hate to wear anything other than sweats on the weekend, but that doesn't mean if we went house hunting that we could not buy a house. That's why people get pre-qualified, so they know what they can shop for. But I also like to be comfortable! Okay, so sometimes I would wear jeans, but that's as fancy as I go LOL!

Sweats or not, one can sense if someone is in their element or not....and so many of these people who walk through the open houses are out of their element. Couple that with their 11 year old kid saying something like "this open kitchen really makes the space look bigger." Uhh....yeah, right.

But, then again, being an open house, this is a time when you don't have to be pre-qualified to take a gander.

True. Before we were pre-qualified, before things started calming down and they quit letting anyone and their dog buy a home, we did go out to open houses to see what you could get for the money and such. We had gone through some financial difficulties with a job loss and were even looking into lease to own homes, and thank goodness we didn't get into something like that. But I do understand what you're saying. Some people do give you a vibe like "There's no way you can afford that!" Kind of like if I walked into a Maserati dealership LOL!

some of the people who turn up at the open houses seem like realtors rather than potential buyers, especially the ones who dress more formally and smartly.

And there are some people who just like to "window shop" houses, they go to these open houses to look around but don't really have any intentions of buying...I know someone who is like that, he just goes to these open houses near his neighbourhood just to check out these houses, but he doesn't want to buy them. Maybe these people go to these open houses just so they could get some ideas on interior designing for their own homes? Open houses are perfect for that, the houses are on the market so you can go in freely and look around and get some ideas.

EDIT:

Also, don't forget that these people can always take out a mortgage to buy these homes, so it's not "impossible" that they are potential buyers either.

Fourteen years ago, my wife and I showed up to look at a house driving our thirty-year-old pickup truck with faded paint and a cracked windshield. I was wearing old jeans, a t-shirt, and grubby running shoes. She was wearing shorts, a t-shirt, and flip-flops. I haven't had a professional haircut for most of my adult life. We bought the half-million-dollar house. Judging people by how rich they look or don't look is for fools.
