The Sad Thing About Those Crappy Houses...

...is that whoever destroyed those houses in the show (like the Cat Nip Flip) are probably now living in another house, destroying that one... and then they'll probably move and destroy the NEXT one... and on and on and on, creating a path of destruction too terrible to comprehend. And all because someone insisted on having 35 cats or something.

If we assume that what we see on TV was the "actual" condition of the home when it was bought. For instance, we often see them enter the home from INSIDE the home (meaning cameras, crew, and equipment are inside before T&C). It would be a simple matter for the production to "prep" the house first for better television.

Yes, of course I do know that many people trash houses (especially foreclosures) but that doesn't exclude my skepticism.

Nothing fails to amaze me. I watched an episode of Hoarders where a couple had two rabbits in this house they were renting. The man didn't work because he had severe anxiety and his wife got ill and could not work as much as she used to. So they let these two rabbits run loose in the house, and I won't spell out what happened next. Fast forward there are probably close to a hundred rabbits running around this house when the hoarder crew arrives. The guy is really combative and cannot figure out what was wrong with letting the rabbits run free. So they finally get the house cleaned out and trap the rabbits. The owner of the home shows up and cannot believe what has happened to his house. The rabbits had chewed holes in the walls and the floors. So they are all standing there talking and more rabbits start coming out of the holes in the walls! At the end the home owner agreed to let them stay in the home but said he would be making random visits to make sure they didn't trash it again. It was something else.

The amount of scumbag and trash who have no shame is amazing.

Also there's plenty of times when a person lives in a house for 30 years, doesn't have the cash or energy to update it, then they pass away and leave it to kids who don't want it, so they just put it on the market to take the cash.

Then you also have the people who buy a house that's slightly dated, can't afford the mortgage much less be able to afford to update it. Get foreclosed on 8 years in, then the bank sits on it for 3 years. Suddenly the house that was only 15 years dated when the person bought it (think a house built in 2002 now), is 26 years out of style.

That's a good point about letting the house go and the kids aren't going to update it. In my area there are houses in the nicer neighborhoods (neighborhoods I drive through and say to myself Man I wish I could afford a house here!) that go on the market for cheap. You look at them and realize why: they need new carpet, new windows, new flooring, new paint etc. You realize they raised all their kids in the home, the kids moved out, the mortgage has been paid off, and now the parents have passed or moved into a care home. Kids need to sell but don't have money of their own to fix it up. Can be a bargain for the neighborhood, but if you don't have the patience to live through a home remodel that makes it rough.
