Surprisingly Good

Definitely a new Halloween favorite for me. I love a good horror film :)

reply

Are you for real? Did you work on the film or something?

It was a horrible film, everything about it was extremely poor even to someone like me who will usually take bad horror films for what they are. It wasn't scary just stupid and badly acted!

reply

99% of all IMDB threads consist of one person saying, "I loved this film." almost immediately followed by another person saying something arrogant, like, "Are you for real? Did you work on the film or something?"

You think he or she worked on the film just because they don't have the same opinion of it as you do? How narrow-minded can you be? Personally, I liked the movie. But then again, I'm probably just the director, writer, or an actor in the movie.

reply

Yes, I do believe both they and you worked on the film. :P

next!

reply

Don't know about them, but I sure didn't work on the movie. And I enjoyed it, overall. Sharpfish, feel free to look at my profile or posting history and you will realize I've been around and seen a lot of different movies.

Open your mind, not everyone thinks like you (and thank God lol)...

No, but if you look at many of the lower rated films, very often either the first review or the first message board topic will say something like: "Better than I expected" or "Surprisingly Good." The weird thing about these posts is that they give the impression that the person reviewing the film expected to see a bad movie and were pleasantly surprised.

The flaw in this is that when people hear a movie is bad, or they expect it to be bad, they don't tend to take their time to actually watch the movie. That is why it gives the impression that the movie is being reviewed by someone who works on it.

And independent from the person you are responding to, that is immediately what it seemed like to me. And I haven't watched the movie, but I intend to.

As someone who watched this late at night, all alone on my player...I was certainly unsettled, and it takes a lot for me to get creeped out by a movie. Is it A-list, no, but that's what works about this movie. While some people make be nit-picky about this or that, I thought the combination of music, costumes and one messed up clown (which are just scary in their own right) made it a worthwhile watch for me. I'm actually impressed with anthology type horror films like this that are coming out lately. Keep up the good work whoever made this!

I didn't get a look at the studio/director/writer before writing this up so...

The third portion and the end where the clown breaks the fourth wall were scary as hell!
I think it was a good movie though sometimes the women got on my nerves with what they did, like stabbing the clown once in the back and thinking that's enough to guarantee safety.

I liked the atmosphere of the film, the acting was hit and miss but not bad overall

and this movie was actually really good. Better than most of the garbage being released in theaters. Conjouring...??? Really... *beep* not even scary.

This was dark and scary. And I hate clowns lol

just saw it, and found it as the subject says, "Surprising Good". this is what I wrote right afterword. "wow, this is one you definitely want to see. kind of an anthology mixed with a real time horror make this a perfect Halloween movie. great soundtrack, true blue gorehound type effects, and a good story. with a mind blowing ending. very very good 4/5".

reply

I "didn't work on this movie" and enjoyed it for what it was.

Overall "great film score" - 4/10
Overall "enjoyable Halloween flick" - 7/10

One does not simply keep clear of the moors . . .

Without John Carpenter's Halloween (I kept hearing the Halloween theme in my head as this thing played out, and the radio ad in the last one was a send up of Halloween III: Season of the Witch and one of the most irritating commercials in existence) and Stephen King's IT, this movie might not have existed. However, at least Pennywise had some class.

The second vignette made no sense when compared to the others, except for maybe shock value.

They had a lot of potential with this and completely messed it up.

this was the BEST halloween horror movie of our years! show some respect...

^no its not. Trick R Treat is way better

Trick R Treat is not way better.

How about taking a liking to both movie instead? Is it that hard?

I enjoyed it as well. I don't understand the responses where people essentially say they like it, but have to say it's not good or qualify their comment with some final negative to save their reputation. That happens too often on IMDB. There's no guilty pleaure in film or music or tv, there's just pleaure;no need to pretend you aren't allowed to like some low budget indie horror flick with no asperations for high art.

There was a very solid sense of dread in the film, and that's a tough atmosphere to create. The only problems it had were budget and experience oriented. It would have worked better shot on film, with more skilled cinematography (not that it was poor or anything, just not as good as it could have been) with more drawn out scenes in places to draw out the dread and tension longer, better camera angles and placement, etc. The budget also constrained the fx a bit (again, still solid for such a small indie crew). I also think that switching to the grain filter at the end was a mistake (perhaps just flashes of it to signify this would become part of the tape), it hurt the impact of the final deaths. The final aspect that could be improved on was in establishing more scenes and tension in the main house, like finally seeing the handle turn at one point like the little boy said happened, and it had been too long since checking on the kids before the end. There wasn't enough scenes like those lingering shots of the very slightly moving closet door, those little scenes can really amp up the tension and dread and so more scenes like that, perhaps some cratch at the window, some atmosphere shots outside, some of a dark room or cellar or attic door, these help a lot.
As is it was a solid horror film. Like I said before, capturing that sense of dread is very difficult. They also had that 4th wall effect, some really solid score pieces (horror music is all too generic these days, so it stood out even more), the clown makeup with the pitch black around the eyes and mouth contrasting with the clown white as well as the black and white costume, was well done too. The acting was standard (you can see worse in much higher budget tv shows and films, so while it could be better, there's not much room for complaint), though the main girl in the core segment did the best job and was actually good. The fact that some of those segments dated as far back as nine years prior to the release of the film was impressive as well, as they didn't feel out of place in terms of crew experience.

A solid horror flick that shows promise for what may come next.

I love how you start out by saying how unnecessary it is to add qualifiers to any positive reaction. And then you yourself essentially say “I like this film but…” and proceed to add five pages of qualifiers, or things they could have done to improve the picture.

And I agree with everything you wrote. Without any qualifiers I have though I’ll say what I love about this film and the Terrifier films is that sense of dread you mentioned. It is ABSENT in most modern horror. This director NAILS IT. I legit have nobody to watch this shit with and I have trouble doing it. I’ve watched Terrifier 2 in short bursts so far. Maybe three. And I’m only at the halfway point. I have become a big pussy, I guess. And I need a cuddle buddy to watch scary shit with.

I also love this movie...fun and creepy. Art the clown is awesome. Great Halloween watch! :)

reply

Agreed. I was veeeeeeery reluctant to rent this film. The only, and I mean ONLY reason I gave it a shot is because it's a halloween-themed movie and I can use all of those that I can get! I expected this to be another z-grade piece of crap.

But it was actually great! The soundtrack was straight out of the 70s and it had a genuine creepy retro vibe. Plus the gore was surprising and effective. It's no Trick 'r Treat but it's one of the better Halloween movies out there, few as they are.

Just the first quarter of this movie alone blows away mainstream garbage Hollywood horror films like the conjuring or Insidious... all of those put together

I'm glad that Art the clown is finally getting his own big movie debut, Terryfier, in 2017 and I honestly believe that he's going to be the next big slasher horror icon, just look at all the scary clowns out there already this year... it's sheer genius on the part of the director and creators.

I don't think that this movie is the very best horror movie ever made, far from it, but it is a cult classic worth watching and after watching it, I can't imagine how they could have really made it much better considering the fact that it's a low budget indie flick...

People that say the acting is sub par don't even know wtf they're talking about, it's actually believable and come on people it's a low budget b grade horror movie, don't apply Oscar standards to it, just enjoy...
