What was the point of ScarJo?

I couldn't figure out why she was in this movie at all. Her character served no purpose. I mean, OK, I guess it shows that he's nailing the hot sommelier at work and that he thought his life was pretty good before the review. But that was it- she was a prop and I don't think the movie would have lost anything by cutting her out. Meanwhile, the Martin character was thinly developed in the first act and suddenly he shows up on the scene as Carl's starting his truck business and is suddenly the most loyal friend ever. Wouldn't this movie have benefitted from cutting all of Johansson's scenes and spending that time developing Martin's character instead? Maybe showing that they were really friends, and not just friendly co-workers, so that it doesn't seem so out-of-the-blue when this guy from earlier in the movie who you barely remember shows up across the country to help him out?

Also, the scene in Austin dragged on for an ungodly amount of time. Otherwise, a solid movie.

I don't care; I was just happy to see her.

I think the fact he shows up in the food truck shows the true loyalty that goes on in the industry. A talented chef will have his team follow him forever. It's a very real thing, however what made this particular film interesting was that it showed him following chef to a food truck.

Natasha Romanoff makes Happy Hogan very happy? (I can't recall if there was a scene where Molly the restaurant manager and bartender spoke to Chef Carl Casper about doing something that would make him "happy.")

If it is what it is, what is it?

Did they break up? they had like heart to heart and she told Favreau to spend time with his kid to get to know him while she "holds down the fort" and then that's it you don't see her anymore throughout the film

that was so weird

And I agree about Leguizamos character it was a bit odd even Favreaus character didn't ask him to leave Hoffmans restaurant with him, he expected Cannavale's character to.

Also Favreau is hung up about being in a rut and he wants to create, create, create but all he does is make hoagies/quiznos sandwiches

The film could have been a lot better and I agree ScarJo's character was absolutely pointless but hers wasn't the only badly written one

She's the MPDG (Manic Pixie Dream Girl, look it up) of the film.
In the way that we know nothing about her, her only purpose in the film is to support and bring relief to the character.

She deserved a little more scenes to make her character fuller...

No, she needs to simply not be there.

I'm familiar with the term and you're using it wrong.

Well obviously Jon just filled the movie up with his friends. If the scene calls for a girl, why not ScarJo. I also thought she functioned well as a red herring. You think for a while he's supposed to be with her. Keeps it fresh. This film is more than a little unrealistic with devoted and competent friends and over the top happy endings.

"I said no camels, that's five camels, can't you count?"

reply

I guess it was a pet project of Jon's since he was writer and director and he directed Scarlett and Robert Downy in the Iron Man movies too...Just helping out a friend I would imagine.

I'm assuming alot of restaurants has a hot hostess whom the chef, and probably the staff bone. They all get at each other at some point.

She was more of a friend than a girlfriend. She urged him to not neglect his son for work he didn't like. He cooked the food he liked making at his place for her and she liked that. Then they went on their own ways.

I don't know everything. Neither does anyone else

She was a close friend that he confided in. Without that conversation with her telling him to spend more time with Percy, he might not have agreed to go to Miami with his ex and son.

reply

I was rather surprised Scarlett was not seen agin after this scene.
