He goes to 1963 using a closet. but when he is in 1963, there is nothing to go back in. how does he go back to his time? I only watched the 1st episode, so sorry if there will be an answer to that later on. I am just so curious and wondering what the explanation is. if there isn't one, it is a really stupid plot hole early on.

You're wrong. The place where there was nothing but air was in the alternate 2015 timeline. Cafe and closet were intact in 1960.

The alternate 2015 timeline you mention was a pile of rubble. (Can't recall if the rubble was diner remnants or some other building/dumping spot).
However, in 1960, it was an open lot. Don't you recall the first time Jake went through? He was suddenly on ground in a dirt/gravel lot.
