I looked through the comments and didn't see any mention of this. Perhaps I just didn't see the post. The second I heard of the novel I immediately thought "Twilight Zone 1980s series". Look up the synopsis for Profile in Silver and see if it sounds a tad familiar to you.

Yeah, it's been discussed here several times, but with IMDB purging comments all too often, they probably all disappeared.
