I agree wholeheartedly!! I understand what others said about always being a difference in a book and a movie, or miniseries in the case. But I've read several books which were then made into movies that I watched and none disappointed me as much as this. For instance, usually I can at least see a reason for a change in the movie. In this case, especially with the book being almost 900 pages, I certainly expected much less detail but it seems the script writer just wanted to change stuff for the hell of it. With any part of the series that does happen to match the novel, even the way that got to that point was totally different! Here's a good example, in the novel, the Glen Miller song Jake and Sadie dance first dance to is "In The Mood". In the series, it's "Little Brown Jug". Why would you "need" to change that for the series?? They are both Glen Miller recordings, I wouldn't think the fee for using the music would be that different.
