I was under the impression this "miniseries?" Was based on the novel. I just turned off episode 2 feeling cheated. It's not at all like the novel. I'm confused, and I can only assume my impression was incorrect. Episode 2, at least what I saw of it, was nothing at all like the novel. And they've turned our main character into a blasted idiot! *Shrug* Disappointed, but at least the novel was great.
What's with all this stuff about a TV show not being like the book (any TV show and any book). They are completely different mediums with different time constraints etc.
Enjoy the TV show for what it is - I think it's great - even though I think they rushed the ending a little too much and they should have had an extra episode. But still a great TV show.
It's an adaptation, not a word-for-word recreation of the book.
I loved the book too but I didn't mind the changes to the miniseries, with one glaring exception: the miniseries ignored so much of Jake's life in Jodie which comprised more than a third of the book, instead opting to shift its focus on Lee. By rushing through Jake and Sadie's relationship it weakened the emotional impact of the ending.
I'm glad I didn't watch that far then. I understand the idea of an adaption. I just don't enjoy them when they stray THIS far from the original work.
Im the same, i don't understand, the book is being made into a tv show because its a great book... why change it to a mediocre show... as with any book/tv adaptation.
10 Eps was enough to do the full story, minus some *beep*

Yeah, there were some differences, but it didn't ruin it for me. In fact, it kind of added to it, because there were just enough differences in the series that I didn't know exactly what was going to happen next.
But face it, people make your same complaint EVERY time a book is adapeted to a series or movie. Just accept it and try to enjoy the show, knowing its nearly impossible to put a what, 900-page book, perfectly into a 2 hour movie, or in this case a mini series.

I agree wholeheartedly!! I understand what others said about always being a difference in a book and a movie, or miniseries in the case. But I've read several books which were then made into movies that I watched and none disappointed me as much as this. For instance, usually I can at least see a reason for a change in the movie. In this case, especially with the book being almost 900 pages, I certainly expected much less detail but it seems the script writer just wanted to change stuff for the hell of it. With any part of the series that does happen to match the novel, even the way that got to that point was totally different! Here's a good example, in the novel, the Glen Miller song Jake and Sadie dance first dance to is "In The Mood". In the series, it's "Little Brown Jug". Why would you "need" to change that for the series?? They are both Glen Miller recordings, I wouldn't think the fee for using the music would be that different.
