Reminds me of Christy

There used to be a show on tv called Christy (1994)that was based on books written by the daughter of a woman who actually lived as a teacher in a rural town. I would highly suggest Christy to anyone that is/has enjoyed viewing When Calls the Heart.

That's the first thing I thought of when this show premiered. I love Christy and wish it had lasted longer.

A few weeks ago, probably because I had been watching this show, I started reading Catherine Marshall's novel, Christy, again and plan on doing another re-watch of the Christy DVDs soon, too.

Both shows had women from wealthy families moving to small, out of the way, areas to become teachers. One in a coal town in Canada, the other in the backwoods of the Great Smoky Mountains. Both were also set about the same time period. Christy was set in 1912 and When Calls the Heart in 1910 (Wikipedia says 19th Century, but in the first episode there was a sub-title on the screen that said 1910).

Christy was a fictionalized novel based on Catherine Marshall's real mother, who left home to teach school in the Smoky Mountains at a young age. I know that When Calls the Heart is based on a Janette Oke novel, but I'm pretty sure it's fictional.

I'm liking this show, too, and hope it sticks around for at least a few seasons, but I still prefer Christy.

After watching the first episode it reminded me of Christy (1994)with Kellie Martin.

Thanks, if you're referring to the Christy book I'm thinking of, I had no idea there was a series. I'll check it out!

There was a tv series that was on for two seasons and a series of movies on PAX tv that tied up the loose ends, including who Christy chooses to marry.

The TV Series was filmed in Townsend, TN. Called Cutter's Gap and El Pano in the book, the actual setting was Morgan's Gap and Del Rio TN, about 2 hours from Townsend. They had considered filming at the actual mission site but it was too remote to get the equipment up there. Some of the roads are pretty narrow. Larry Myers lives on the Christy Mission site. His mother, Opal Corn Myers provided information on the mission to Catherine Marshall when she was writing Christy. It is really beautiful there.

I think I liked the original Christy series on CBS which had starred Kellie Martin & Tyne Daly (way back in 1994-95), rather than the continuation movies that came a few years later, but that was mainly because I'd found the new actress playing 'Christy' to be too young for the actor playing 'Neil McNeil', let alone the fact they recast almost everyone...but that's just me. lol.

I miss watching "Christy" in 1995. What a magical show. And more true to life than this one. Ah, memories...
