That's the first thing I thought of when this show premiered. I love Christy and wish it had lasted longer.
A few weeks ago, probably because I had been watching this show, I started reading Catherine Marshall's novel, Christy, again and plan on doing another re-watch of the Christy DVDs soon, too.
Both shows had women from wealthy families moving to small, out of the way, areas to become teachers. One in a coal town in Canada, the other in the backwoods of the Great Smoky Mountains. Both were also set about the same time period. Christy was set in 1912 and When Calls the Heart in 1910 (Wikipedia says 19th Century, but in the first episode there was a sub-title on the screen that said 1910).
Christy was a fictionalized novel based on Catherine Marshall's real mother, who left home to teach school in the Smoky Mountains at a young age. I know that When Calls the Heart is based on a Janette Oke novel, but I'm pretty sure it's fictional.
I'm liking this show, too, and hope it sticks around for at least a few seasons, but I still prefer Christy.

After watching the first episode it reminded me of Christy (1994)with Kellie Martin.
