Any reason why this takes place in Canada?

Nothing against Canada, but my guess is the books are Canadian based?

Otherwise, they could avoid some of these silly misplaced cultural references.

reply

Yes, the books take place in Canada. But make no mistake...this series has no resemblance to the books.

Not one bit.

Yes, Canada is where the Mounties are.
But seriously

silly misplaced cultural references.

I've felt that as well; but I don't know enough about Canadian culture, especially in that era, to be sure.

The same applies to anachronistic probabilities. E.g., cars of the 1900-1910 period when there is ragtime music on the radio.

Janette Oke, the author of the books, is from Canada. That's the main reason.

I'm totally missing the cultural references you're referring to. Mind sharing some of them? I'd find it amusing. Many of us Canadians take our culture for granted but we are kind of unique in some ways. If you are referring to the obvious stuff like Mounties, then, I get it. I thought you may be referring to something more subtle.

Cheaper labour, eh? 

As a sidenote to the other posts here, it seems like most of the Hallmark movies are produced in Canada.

In the '90s, it was cheaper to film shows in Vancouver vs. America. Maybe that's still the case now.

Any "Anne of Green Gables" fans on this board? I loved the classic PBS movies. I even got to meet the late actor that played "Gilbert Blythe" Jon Crombie in person in 2008 after a play in Chicago, my hometown. Martin Sheen stars in a recent remake of the film, I'm not sure when it will air this year.
