Costumes, Hair, & Sets - Your opinion please

What do you think of the quality on this show? I think they do an decent job except the hair & makeup. Almost all the women wear their hair down instead of up. The makeup is too bright & colorful. The sets are great though. It's just a bit jarring the modern hair/makeup against the great sets & even costumes.

Love the set and costumes. But i just wish that Hollywood or in this case Canadianwood, would get period references correct. When they referred to the man (in the beginning, in court room) as being like a pitbull...so incorrect!!! There were no preconceived notions at that time regarding the breed! Helen Keller had pitbulls and actually it was a very popular farm dog, as they were nicknamed the "nanny dog", as they were and continue to be sooo good watching the kids! The women would do chores and the dog or dogs would make sure the kids would stay in one area of the home. So that was the only part i picked up on that the writers got extremely wrong.

I was just going to comment that the women are beginning to look ridiculously modern. Their hair, in particular, but the makeup and even some of the clothing choices. There was one shot tonight of Lori Loughlin, an outdoor shot where she happened to be wearing a coat, and nothing about her stood out as old-fashioned. If I'd seen a still photo from the set, I would have thought it was from a movie set in modern times.

I was also noticing that the buildings in town are nicely painted with accent colors on the trim, etc. It looks nice, but I'm not sure it looks authentic. Maybe in the bigger cities, but not in a little mining town.

Still love the show, though.

I agree! Only a woman of "loose morals" would have worn make up at all in that day and age. Back then, makeup could only be purchased in theatrical supply stores. The makeup on the show is way overdone.

Also, the costumes are not always right. If you look in the train station scene, there is a woman walking behind Jack wearing a knee-length outfit over high boots. That wouldn't have happened in the early 1900s!

I came on here specifically because of this. It really bothered me. The hair especially was all wrong. So modern. The clothing and make up was as well. There were scenes where I would have guessed it was a period piece at all! what's happened?? Its completely put me off the show.

Absolutely! They were MUCH more authentic last season! Then they took over a year to return & have completely glammed & modernized it all up. The women are ALL beautiful... no one is plain, the town does NOT look like a mining town any longer, & the familiarity with which the characters speak to each other now... completely wrong! It's very off-putting. I still love the spirit of the show, but Hollywood is killing everything good about Coal Valley.

Glad I'm not the only one who noticed all the women seemed to wear their hair down and loose. Yet very well made up. It just doesn't look authentic. Otherwise I enjoy the show. They just need get the look right for the era. Someone isn't paying attention there!

Yes, I agree. I just finished watching the season 2 premiere and I was shocked at how "made up" Elizabeth looked whilst back in Hamilton. I understood it was a city and a dinner event, but even during the day, the make-up was too much for me to accept for that era and also, the hair, I was wondering if there was a shortage of hair combs or something and then I come to see that all the sisters are wearing their hair down. I was disappointed with that, but it was still entertaining.

I agree, but apparently the network wanted to update the costumes a bit this season.
