I miss the style of season 1. :(

I was watching part of an episode of season 1; it'd been a while since I'd done that, and the difference was more striking. I'm sure the difference is that they had a bigger budget, and probably found out the audience wasn't big enough to sustain it, because every aspect of it was better: the writing, directing, costumes, makeup, hair, even the cinematography.

The 3rd season hasn't been as bad as the 2nd. My favorite character is probably Bill Avery b/c he has a bit of grit to him. He's willing to get his hands dirty, you know, that sort of thing. But, in my opinion, there's too much of Abigail & the annoying little boy & not enough Jack. Ok, there's my 2 cents. All that being said, I really hope they bring it back for a 4th season.

I agree with you, I miss the grittier, hardship look of the beginning of season one had. I liked the look of Abigail without the hair and makeup done soap opera style. The costumes are really distracting, especially the coats. There was better character development then as well. That being said, I'm still watching, just wishing for more of the season one flavor though.

You're exactly right. Yeah, the coats are terrible! In particular Henry Gowen's. I can tell they were trying to make him look well-off by giving him one with the "fur" around the collar, but it looks so fake, so synthetic! How much money could it have really cost to get a decent-looking fur, especially when it's a coat he uses so often? The others look synthetic as well. I noticed the costumes & hair were a bit better this most recent episode, but still a long way to go.

I totally agree on you with all of it, especially in the look & tone of S1 vs S2 & 3, etc.

Anyway, as far as Henry Gowen's coat, I totally agree that a real fur would look much more authentic as fashions from the early 20th century (think Downton Abbey S1 & 2, for example), but most likely fake fur was used on WCTH because of budget constraints...and no doubt fear that media 'watchdogs' from PeTA who'd probably complain to the show's producers if someone 'wore real fur' on the show.  smh 

I am watching the first episode of Season 2 and I have to agree. The hair, costuming and dialogue is driving me crazy. Even in this one episode, it's enough to stop watching I think. It reminds me of that teen series Reign now.

I totally agree about the difference between S1 and S2. It has lost the flavor of the period with the change in the hairstyles, costuming, and dialogue, and I am disappointed to learn season 3 is the same. Someone suggested it is budget constraints, but they have more elaborate dresses so that can't be it. And it takes far less time to put hair up in a bun than create waves and curls with a straight iron, which would be much more appropriate for frontier women of the period. Even a single woman of Elizabeth's age would not have worn her hair loose.
