Why is it called When Calls the Heart?
Is there a specific reason why the title is grammatically incorrect/irritating? Why not: When the Heart Calls?? Love the series, just not the title...

shareI've wondered that, too. Maybe it's explained in the books, but I haven't read them.

Tell your god to ready for blood.
Simple answer: because that's what the author called the books, and that's the types of titles she uses. Love Comes Softly was a bit odd as well.
share"Love comes softly" is prefectly normal grammar.
If she were to "when calls the heart" it, it would be "Comes softly love".
I think she felt it would be artsy to mix up title words in an unintelligible way. At least she didn't call it "Giraffe Indigo 9: Bolshevik"
Spock! Form an away team! You, me, Bones, Scotty and umm... Ensign Smith!
I always assumed the "When" part of the book title had to do with a play on Elizabeth's husband in the books. His name is Wynn. As for the order of the words, I'm not really sure. It is never said outright like in Love Comes Softly (Ma Graham tells Marty that sometimes love comes softly, you don't realize you're falling for someone until it has already happened).
share"When calls the heart" isn't grammatically incorrect, people just don't typically talk like that. The author probably thought it fit the time period the story is set in.
shareI've read the books and at one point I use to read the whole series every year. It really never explains why it is called "When Calls The Heart" but I guess it explains it.
The books are great and I recommend them to all my friends. If you love the show I'd suggest you read it. The first book is one of my favorites. Elizabeth is a young woman who is wealthy. She grows up enjoying the good life but longs for more. Much to her parents surprise she agrees to be a teacher. She is sent off to go live with her brother and waits for placement at her first teaching position. She meets Wynn at this time. He is friend of her brother's family. The man who is to decide to hire her likes her and actually wants to marry her. She is shocked and reminds him she is wanting to be a teacher not a wife. So what I see for revenge he sends her to the most isolated, area for her teaching job. She ends up living in a tiny cabin type home having to learn to survive on her own. She struggles a lot. She also struggles with teaching her students but she does well and bonds with them. I love this part of the story. She returns back and I won't spoil the rest of the story.
Basically for me the "When Calls The Heart" comes when she has to decide what to do. Is she going to return to teaching or follow her heart and fall for a Royal Canadian Mountie who already makes it clear he could never marry. He is determined to not drag a woman into the hard life he lives. So together they have to look into their heart.
I'd say for me the whole reason I love the series is you learn a lot about the work that goes into being a Royal Canadian Mountie. I find it very interesting such as the work they do with different tribes, the customs of a tribe and the acceptance of white people into a tribe.
Could you imagine being the only English speaking woman in your town? By town I mean just a tiny group of homes? Everyone around you speaks another language, your husband is gone for days or even weeks, you are left alone with these people who are scared of you just as you are scared of them. One place where they live a man speaks English but he isn't talking to a woman or he doesn't like talking to a woman. Just going out of the tiny house is scary for her.
I love these books and this series. It is completely different from the show though but be open and read the books. You will like them.
