Floppy disks?!?!?

What year was the story supposed to take place? I didn't see anything that would indicate that it wasn't set in the present. So why the hell did an important plot point revolve around 3 1/2" floppy disks? It makes no sense.

Can somebody who read the book clarify? Is there a reason why floppy disks were used?

I wondered as well but it makes sense to store vital data in mediums not easily accessible by everyone.

I think it's for creating tension. It would be even more ridiculous to hand over 15 usb drives or 10 SDcards.
