Bloom's story was easily discredited

The detective seemed to have it out for Bloom and obviously didn't trust him. If she wanted to all she needed to do is find security camera footage and see the red car trailing the suv.

There are so many cameras around now this would be like one day of work.

Or, even more likely, any drug smuggling house is also going to have tons of cameras so the intruders would have been identified from that.

Just a movie, I guess ? I did generally like it though, especially Jake's performance.

Not only that but they would easily tell if the footage had been edited and even if he deleted it it's easily recovered plus his Internet history would show he search the cars registration number so he clearly lied to the police.

It was an ok movie but he would be arrested in real life even for just following the chase at high speed or entering two properties after a crime, for the first property he had no excuse the family was outside and the police where on the scene.

Yeah I agree. I know people are falling all over themselves about this movie, but police should have easily been able to piece together enough evidence to at a minimum follow him around for a few days and catch him staging crime scenes, tampering with evidence, not aiding dying people when he had the opportunity to do so, etc. etc.

Your comment and the couple of replies so far miss the point of the story. It isn't to address every detail of whether Bloom can actually get away with everything, it is to focus on him, his character, his ruthlessness, his being disingenuous with others, his using people, his extreme focus on doing what is good for him with no regard for what might happen to others. It is a character study, and it is fiction.

Fictional movies, precisely because they are fiction, rarely if ever are "air-tight" if you dig enough to try to find possible inconsistencies. Even the greatest fictional movies of all time. They all require viewers to focus on the core story and not to get too hung up on some of the details. I know many viewers like to do that but I don't see how that can help enjoy the overall story.

I too had mixed feelings about this. I think he could have been very easily caught if this was real life, but as a movie it works to suspend our disbelief.
For me, what made the movie was my discomfort that he actually got away with it. I WANTED him to be caught, and was disgusted that he didn't. As an allegory, it's pretty brilliant. Think about how much capitalism, privilege, media sensationalism, etc don't get caught for their moral crimes either.
I liked Gyllenhall's character as an allegory more then a realistic criminal.

So you are assuming that this guy who spends all his time on computer, wouldn't know how to edit a video and delete original?

He doesn't need RAW footage after he's done editing it. He can also format the memory card and write over it to prevent data reconstruction.

Actually, how exactly will detective get warrant to search for all these videos? Cause she has a hunch he did so? That would land her in trouble more than Lou.

reply

Who says that she didnt? We only saw a couple scenes after the climax of the film. We assume that he got away with everything because he seemed fine in those, but that doesnt mean that we won't ever get caught for the crimes he committed.

reply

Agreed. Plus LA does have some amount of crime going on. So maybe that detective, she really wanted to dig into this case but was dismissed by a superior and made to work on other cases?

Also very likely. There arent any loose ends in the official story. Cartel members get killed in fancy house, reporter records aftermath, killers go after the potential reporter witness, reporter notices himself being followed, cops apprehend the suspects and kill them in a shootout. The cop suspects that Lou might have been holding back evidence or doing something sketchy, but that isnt going to take priority over any unsolved murder or bank robbery case.
