I missed something in this movie. Louis made a whole lot of demands about what he wanted and later mentioned things he wanted including Nina's behaviour when they were home.
I feel like I missed something here. Did they become an item?
Did Nina eventually change her mind about getting involved with him?
I think so. I was confused about this, the rating on my dvd was MA15+ strong violence, themes and sex scenes. I thought sex scenes would be a little out of place when I started watching, then they got to the blackmail scene and he tried to get her to have sex and I figured this is where it comes into it but it's almost like it got cut from the movie. Kind of odd, there was nothing sexual about it and yet very strong sex scenes rating.
As you mention, there is a point where Louis mentions that he was alone with Nina in her apartment the night before. But he speaks of the night in frustration, as if Nina did not do what he wanted.
Overall, my sense was that Nina was leading on Louis to get his videos -- spending time with him, but not going all the way.
The movie, however, does not confirm one way or the other.
I read it as they were sleeping together, but from then on (the scene when he came with the murder house tape) he wanted her to do everything in bed that he pleased. It sounded like she had limits and he demanded that he be in control in bed from then on. It came as a shock, because after the diner/date talk it seemed like Nina wasn't sure what to do, but apparently she slept with him off screen.. Very creepy and gross.
No affair.. She was his bitch egging him on his madness which blurred the line between journalism and humaneness. They had what you can call 'friend with benefits'.
The sex is implied, but I think from that Lou implies is that maybe she came over to his apartment one night and was able to get out of having sex with him. She maybe thought she could satiate him just by spending time with him.
That's why Lou gets so angry. They've plateaued, she's not putting out and he's not connecting with anyone else in the business. This is why he gets so angry at her and demands things when he brings the good footage.
I forget the exact wording of his line but I came away with the idea that they were having sex but that she wasn't willing to do everything he demanded. He stressed the word 'all' or 'everything.' That was my take anyway.
Did you miss the scene int he Mexican restaurant where he was basically blackmailing her for sex?
NINA: Friends don't pressure friends to sleep with them.
He would take footage to other stations and she would be out a job come the end of her contract.
LOU: And the last thing that I want, Nina, is for you to do the things that I ask you to do when we're alone together in your apartment, NOT LIKE THE LAST TIME.
yes there was an affair -she was forced into it

Yes. Nina was having sects with him. She was doing so reluctantly, effectively whoring herself out for the good video clips that would keep her her job. It was not an "affair" per se, since she probably hated herself for doing it. He repulsed her as a person, but she wanted the video he could get.
The fact that she sleeps with him was obvious long before he refers to her behavior "at her apartment". When he proposed a sexual relationship with her...well I would say bullied it from her...she was clearly opposed to the idea, offended, yet he said "You're not leaving." And she was not. The fact that she did not leave the dinner table, and continued to stay after he directly implied that "not leaving" was tantamount to accepting his terms, is the writer's way of telling you it was about to occur.
But for those who need a little more clarity, they put the "some things you did not do willingly do in your apartment" line in later on. This cements the existence of a sexual relationship, and indicates she had certain boundaries, which he was no longer willing to accept. Think backdoor, or similar.
Agree with Derek. She was being blackmailed really and was having sex with him for his videos. He was probably asking for some pretty unpleasant stuff.
I don't see how there's any disagreement about this! He specifically blackmailed her in that scene in the restaurant. Told her she'd better give him a physical relationship or he'd take his precious videos to her competitors and kill her career.
The scene where he told her he wanted her to be more cooperative when they were alone in her apartment clearly meant that spreading her legs wasn't enough; he wanted some very specific stuff (probably nasty).
Affair implies that one of them was cheating on a SO, which is not correct, so I wouldnt use that wording. But yes, things were going on between them.
They left the sex scenes offscreen for this movie and I think it worked very well. Its implied that Lou was requesting pretty F'd up stuff from her and she wasnt 100% willing to adhere to his requests. If they had showed those scenes, either they would have been tamed down and ineffective or very explicit and disturbing. Leaving things up to the audience's imagination is sometimes the best option.
They had an affair but Linda was blackmailed into having it and didn't like it at all. It seemed so at least but towards the end when Louis gave her the footage she didn't seem to mind it. I'm guessing she just took all his kinky sex stuff later in bed, without questions.
The thing is, peoples sexual boundaries are vastly different. If they had been much more descriptive about what he had asked, half of the audience would have been outraged at how messed up it was and the other half would have said no big deal.
Leaving it up to the imagination ensures that each audience member is picturing something right outside the boundaries of what they consider acceptable, whatever that may be.
Yes, they definitely had a physical relationship not shown on screen. Lou just basically wanted sex and didn't seem to be much into it for the emotional side of it. Nina, of course, didn't want to lose what he brings to the news station. Though, it did seem at times that Nina was at least intrigued by Lou's intelligence and overall views, so that probably had at least a small amount to do with the overall relationship.
Yes He blackmailed her to have sex with him. What I take from this movie is that he was a very evil person although we only get hints of how evil he actually was. I take it he sabotaged the competitions van. He basically killed his partner. He was a thief, a murder and only concerned with his future. He would do whatever it took to accomplish his goals.
