I've seen the film and read your post so I watched the trailer, you have most definitely not been spoiled, just thought I'd tell you since you have the wrong idea. I was wondering why I was reading Misery comparisons everywhere here, that would be the trailer.
I have seen it, and I still feel it was like Misery.
Unknown was quite good, and I hoped this would be, but nah.
Reading the synopsis, I thought it was giving away the whole thing, but it doesn't. Plenty of twists are left. If foe some reason, you can stay awake to get to them.

Watching this was misery in it's own sense, I was tempted to skip ahead through parts that seemed unnecessary because of the slow pace and Bosworth's delivery was both boring and began to get annoying, not to discredit her, I'm sure the director is to blame on that one.
As for the comparison of the film Misery and this I don't see the similarities other than the start of him being in bed at her will drugged up for a little while, but even the foot injury was fake and it's not like he was writing any books, even the twist in the end she was actually his wife, he just bumped his head. This film got under my skin to some degree, the twist at the end seems to tie things together, but when examining it closely her highly inconsistent and bizarre behavior was explained by slapping a big crazy sticker over her. Why wouldn't she tell him? To have a perfect family I know, but really? Then she resorts to murdering the mailman and a cop all because she didn't tell him the truth, if she had he wouldn't be screaming for help and causing these things to happen. Then there's that dead body he first found in the basement no explanation there. If she really wanted to practice lobotomies she wasted a few good opportunities. Oh and the cats thing was weird too, him having no memory of having cats when there are numerous ones running around everywhere, just odd that he would not remember them in the slightest bit.
It seemed like Michael Polish was striving to achieve a sort of Hitchcockian feel, but I feel that it just fell flat. share
you hit the nail on the head with your analysis. I have to admit though I kind of enjoyed it just on the fact that it was consistently surprising and weird, but definitely not a good film.

I think it was your statement. Please correct me if I'm wrong that she wanted to practice lobotomies, you need victims and she was baby crazy.

Yea at the time she told him that was her first husband, but that statement and the presence a relatively fresh dead body didn't make a bit of sense when we finally find out that they were truly husband and wife and had been for quite some time, how much time we don't know for sure. The "first husband" statement I would justify as flawed writing because it seems likely that the dead guy in the closet was just another guy who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, my guess is it was someone who got in her way between the time of the accident and the time they arrived back at the house.
My complaint about the lobotomy was when she tells Wes that she must first try the procedure on him so she doesn't screw it up and kill the girl, she killed so many others without a second thought when she could have used them as practice, but no she left herself no choice, but to strap Wes in as her last resort before doing it to the girl. It's just bad inconsistent writing really, they chose to use the main character for that scene to ratchet up the tension, which worked it was a tense scene, but illogical. The lobotomy tool was so ridiculous I actually lol'd, it looked like a damn railroad spike! I don't believe it was stainless steel either. Here is a picture of a proper tool, it should be no thicker than a pencil..............

Yeah she could have easily practiced on the others but I figured she was telling him that just to psychologically torture him before doing it. Telling him she has had a lot of practice isn't as terrifying as telling him she has never done one - that implies a more gruesome and torturous possibility.
shareTrue, they maxed out that scene for all it was worth. For me the idea of getting a lobotomy invokes more fear than the possibility of death, more fear than your average severe torture session because knowing that your basic consciousness is being killed, everything that defines you as a person is gone or horribly scrambled and then left like a drooling vegetable in the care of a complete psychopathic madwoman for the remainder of your life, very unsettling. Not to mention the long ice pick getting hammered into the corner of your eye to your brain to have it wiggled around violently is quite displeasing as well.
shareThe lobotomy scene completely freaked me out. I could feel myself pulling my head back! Kate mentioned in an interview she wanted her voice to be something like a morphine drip. I think it was a great call. I found Amnesiac a movie I thought a lot about later. BTW, I'm glad they dropped the cat/lobotomy storyline!

I laughed at the "Labotomy Ice Pick" also. It wasn't even sharp. The woman had all these tools and that was the best she could come up with?? She plans everything out so meticulously and fails with that.
shareI don't see Misery at all. Misery was only about a crazed fan. There was way more to this. Way more that we never get to find out about. The only thing I feel is I want more info.
