Molly is 6 in 1979, but i'm pretty sure she said she's 31 in season 1 which takes place in 2006.

a true fan would have been with the show since season 1, in the same time period

Wut? FYI the only two shows I watched for years (as in; follow the entire series and watch the newest episode not long after release) was Game of Thrones and South Park. I was not a hardcore TV (nor movie) buff in 2014.

Although I enjoyed all the seasons (including the current one so far)... season 1 had a different tone compared to season 2 or season 3 which feel more like the movie. I'm not sure but maybe they rebooted the writers after season 1, which could account for the inconsistency.
