I have to admit, the ending was a bit of a letdown. Dagny ends up with Galt. Then they kind of just leave the world in shambles ready to rebuild. I'm not sure how else they could have done it, but I just didn't think it was the best ending. I will still see it.
it was also odd given the romance between Hank reardon and Dagny Taggart. The guy leaves his wife and is ready for her and... sh's taken off with another bloke.
Kind of falls in line with Rand's perception of doing what is right and elevating to the Self. Dagny's not responsible for anything Hank does. Hand does what he does of his own volition. As does Dagny. That Hank ditches his wife for Dagny is of no concern to her. That's Hank;s choice and Dagny's not at all obligated to Hank's choice.
That's also one Reason peopel don't like her Objectivism. I'd hardly be classified as a Socialist, I reject all forms of Collectivism and love Individualism and Choice and freeom, but I also acknowledge things like Obligation, Loyalty, Trust, and Duty which Rand seems to reject. To rand there may have only been two Kinds of people but, really I think she's representitive of one extreme opposign another extreme. you can have Altruism, just as you can have personal gain, and both can co-exist. I don't think that it's a simple black and white issue, and still think you shoudl respect hwo others feel in yoru own dealings with them.
Well that would certainly make things smoother and there's something to be said for the advantages of empathy. Hell, effective advertising is contingent upon it.
rearden's wife certainly wasn't worthy of obligation, loyalty, etc.
when rearden meets john galt, he instinctively knows who the alpha dog is. what alpha wants, alpha gets. alpha wants dagny, alpha gets dagny. there is never disharmony or competition in alpha dog galt's pack. considering the whole pack is made up of alpha dogs, to me this just comes off as weird.
This is also why Galt recruits people from different walks of life and abilities. It eliminates any competition. Too bad. It would have been nice to have more than just Halley playing piano for quarters. Just because they're Alphas doesn't mean they don't like to ROCK!
don't you know what dogs do to wolves? (gotta throw in my game of thrones quotes where i can!)
no competition in the gulch? that's downright communistic! and how could he know that the professors he recruited would become different kinds of farmers (all brilliant, of course!) instead of picking two corn experts? that galt is just a genius!
galt doesn't have a shortage of recruits when it comes to dagny's men, though frisco & rearden go paws-up for galt in a heartbeat. too bad rand misses the opportunity to beat heinlein to the punch and have them all share her - especially since there seems to be a shortage of women in the gulch.
I think in "Atlas Shrugged Again" we find our heroine, Dagny, has found her true worth and value in the gulch and shrugs her hips and thighs, marketing her all-too valuable commodity to the menfolk in the Gulch.
It always comes full circle to the oldest form of capitalism on the planet.
