1950's, 1960's America was a utopia

Atlas was printed in 1957. I am surprised, that was when middle class America ruled. Compared to today it was truly a utopia.

reply

It was printed then, I was not written then and it failed miserably, it was a cautionary tale not a comment of the times do some research.

reply

It was a permanent bestseller.

reply

Yeah, the women and minorities were just living it up. It's easy to feel Utopic when you have over half the population oppressed to your advantage.

OK, here we go........in 1960 blacks were 10% of the population. They owned more buisness then. Their marriage rate was much higher, their crime rate was much lower. By almost any social method they were better off then. Yes there was Jim Crow in the south but are whites or blacks better off today?

reply

Some are, some aren't. But I think the opportunities for women and minorities are vastly improved, whether in these modern times, they choose to take advantage of them or not.

Two of the biggest reasons for that post-war boom: the progressive social policies of the Roosevelt/Truman era, and a high tax rate without precedent. Yes, there were some grave social ills in the 1950s, but it is also the era that so many Conservatives look back on with awe and fondness… and it's mostly because of policies that they would now deplore. Ironic.

The high tax rate is a myth. The rich hid the money in their corprations. Hefs playboy jet was "owned" by the corporation.

reply

When taxation takes a majority of your income it becomes theft and avoiding it becomes resistance.
