The glass of water...

Trying to guess the significance of the tight shots on the glass of water at the beginning, and the end.

Any ideas?

For some of us, the focus on the glass of water implies the drinking water crisis around the world, reminding us how fucked up we are as a moninant species of the earth....Or perhaps it is just a glass of water. Yet, a mindful audience would notice that Lena offered the glass of water to "Kane" without knowing for sure whether he was her husband or not. Same as later, the scientises offered Lena a glass of water before confirming she was still a human. We have seen this kind of scene in other sci-fi movies like "The Day the Earth Stood Still" and "Man in Black". Should we praise it as some kind of humanitarian careness? Or regard it as a normal good intention among the decent people?

I found the significant of those two shots are related to the hands refracted through a glass of water. This reflects the marriage relationship between Lena and Kane. In the first shot, Lena took her hand away when Kane admitted he only recognized her face. We immediately sensed the distrust and rejection between them. Kane felt sick after drank the water. It was more due to a Kane's suicidal tendency caused by Lena's infidelity, rather than any physical issue. In the later shot, when Lena drank the water, we noticed Lena was still wearing her wedding ring, which suggests that she was willing to follow through Kane's arrangement to save their marriage.

After drank it, Lena took a few seconds staring at the glass, made us wonder whether we will see blood in the water. Which indicates that Lena was aware of the change inside her and she was testing herself.

zeesha, I agree. Lena noticed that her husband left some blood behind when she offered him a glass of water when he first showed up at her house. Then, realizing at the end that this was a clone or mirror of her husband who had left the blood she tested herself to make sure she wasn't a clone too.

she tested herself to make sure she wasn't a clone too.

Actually, my take on is slightly different. Previously when Lena examined her blood cells, she found 50% mutation whenever a cell divide inside her. As a biologist, she knew what this usually meant: In a short time, she would die in cancer or become a mutant monster/tree. Apparently, in the end, nothing bad had happened to her. But to be honest to herself, she guessed she was changed inside into something new that not so much different than her cloned husband. By drinking the glass of water, she was testing herself to see if she would get sick and bleed to death.

The water on the side of the glass was one splash that split into 2... kinda like a cell

I noticed that too. I love details like that.

Perhaps there's also some symbolism of the fact that it refracts. Everything looks distorted though a glass of water.
Who knows?
Nevertheless it doesn't actually follow the book much.
