How the hell did Begbie get to settle down in California once he gets released from prison? He has a list of convictions the length of your arm and AFAIK you can't get into the US if you have any convictions against you.

Because... he's Begbie? or maybe he used another name.

Probably has something to do with his bird in it, aren't there special things for spouses in imigration. Also isn't the only thing he's ever been convicted of manslaughter.

Begbie's been in and out of young offenders' institutions and prisons since his teenage years.
