I loved Trainspotting, and think that (probably more than any other film I can think of) it's success at the time was probably propelled with it's synergy with Born Slippy - the YMCA of the Trainspotting generation...
Does this film need something similar to hit the same high? And if so, what contemporary track - for that same generation now - could do it?
The whole soundtrack was epic. For me, 2:1 and of course Lust For Life are standouts. Well, add Atomic to that list.
Now, I have no idea how they can make it even remotely similar in quality. The soundtrack is important part of Trainspotting. But music scene these days is just pathetic.
Since the movie is in 2006, they have to use the Libertines, but apart from that I am lost.

Would be interesting to guess some tracks from the correct time period, but why do you say it's set in 2006? I've been reading it's going to be set 20 years down the line from Trainspotting, i.e. now-ish...
the book is 10 years later. this is pure guessing, well, hoping, cos i cannot say that there are any decent songs from fresh artists made in past few years.
british scene is dead. rnr is over, apart from the old bands and artists, but they are not gonna last forever. and it needs to be something new, something a bit unknown, like they did with the original soundtrack. it was Iggy, Pulp, but also Sleeper, Elastica, less known names.
imagine freaking Coldplay on Trainspotting... 😨
its not you. hyper-production killed music. it also killed movies. and there was one part I just do not get: both Ferry and Rod Stewart had wonderful albums in the past 2 years. no one talked about them. it is all Rihanna, Beyonce, Kanye, well the Jay Z crew. Add Swifty, Perry to that something called Drake and Diplo and there is your music scene in 2016.
I just hope we will hear Iggy again, he was part of Trainspotting, as Ziggy Pop.
I like FF, they are underrated band, they sound better live, which is great.
Born Slippy is one of a kind. But they can make hit songs, cover songs, and create a decent, above average OST. Also, they NEED Bowie. Regardless if it is 2006 or 2016 or 2017.
Garbage is also a good idea, since Shirley is Scottish. Primal Scream are also Scottish.
I have no idea what is this whole project going to look like, but Twin Peaks is returning, this is like a cherry on the top of a cake.
This could be a huge problem. It would be very easy for T2 to go down the route of being hipsterish. To add insult to injury you also have a film based on 4 middle aged working class men, three of which were ex heroin addicts, one of which served time. And the last time we saw those guys was in the mid 90's. It could be horrendous or it could be genius. I'm guessing it'll be about the generation gap. I hope Danny Boyle goes down this route, it could be very interesting.
No because the characters are old now and the story seems to be nostalgia. Born slippy was their song, the song that reminded them of when they were young. A new song wouldn't mean as much to them.
