All still alive?
I don't mean to sound morbid or cynical, but is anyone else surprised that all these characters are still alive 20 years later?

shareEspecially Sick Boy, the trailer shows that he's continued to take drugs so how the hell is he still there? Renton is almost understandable since he did stop taking drugs but they all were heavy smokers in the first film.
shareGuys, they're all in their 40's, not their 70's! Most people who smoke, drink and do drugs last a lot longer than you'd think. The small percentage of early deaths due to one or all of those factors that you read about and see on the news are just that.. A small percentage. There's every chance all 4 of them would be still ticking over.
shareSmoking and drinking, sure, you can keep that up for decades. Mainlining heroin gets the job done faster though.
shareIt definitely increases your chance of an early death, but there are plenty of people out there that have been shooting up for 30+ years and they're doing just fine.

" but they all were heavy smokers in the first film." Yeah, if they're not dead by the age of 40 due to smoking, they should have been stoned to death, as a punishment for smoking.
Sorry, I couldn't think of a pathetic "smart" term for cigarettes.
Not at all : if Ozzy Osbourne is still alive then anything is possible for any human being.
In real life at least one of them would be dead I think.
The whole Trainspotting think was crazy,I wonder if people read the book or saw the film and thought it was a cool lifestyle, then adopted it and realised that being a junkie is hell?

I have not seen La La Land yet so I might agree it is inane drivel once I have seen it.
Not being able to see a film because of the premiere is not the point.
I would have been unhappy if it had been any film that spoiled my plans.
But I live 10 minutes from Leith (lived in Elbe Street for the first 5 years of my life, live the rest of my life 10 minutes away in Restalrig, went to Leith Academy, used to work at Leith benefits office),I know the harm drugs have done to my community.
I honestly think that the Trainspotting book and the film has made hard drug abuse seem cool.
Someone watching The Wizard Of Oz can't follow the Yellow Brick Road because it is just a scene in a film, they can choose to try drugs and hang about with idiots.
Of course if Irvine Welsh had never written a word people would still be abusing drugs.
Sorry for going against the tide of Welsh's worship.

I read the book not long after it came out and I have seen the film.
I am from Edinburgh and because the book is set here it was a cult, everybody seemed to be reading it and the film was very popular as well.
I understand you might not agree with me and you might even think I am stupid but I don't get why you suggest I am a liar.
I don't know about sane, but I agree that people who actually understand the book would not think it is pro drugs but I think that a lot of people don't get the book or the film.
But I think a lot of people who read the book are not people who read a lot of books and they might not get the difference between an author describing something and an author advocating something.
It is a bit like Clockwork Orange.
If it was set in Glasgow, most of them would be dead or dying, (low life expectancy)
shareThere is a brief aside where Sick Boy mentions that one of their old dealers has died.
shareThe death rate for people with similar lifestyles is the same where ever you are.
There are non smoking, non drinking people in Glasgow with great lifestyles and walking disasters in Edinburgh.
If the characters in this were real people they would know lots of people who had died due to being junkies, even if they survived themselves.
I stopped buying the BIG ISSUE magazine years ago partly because it suggested more than once that there were lots of junkies who led ordinary lives.
