Tommy

Simon (Sick Boy) says in this that he died from Aids...in the original he got toxoplasmosis from his kitten which led to his death. Is this in the book or an oversight?

 It's indie rock and roll for me 

Tommy died 20 years ago - he probably just misremembered the fine details.

Aids destroyed his auto immune system which makes even minor infections particularly nasty. He was shown with a new kitten, representing an effort at responsibility. Sadly kittens are prone to toxoplasmosis (often found in old stagnant water as well). The infection killed him.

You 'have' aids when your immune system/white blood cell count is down to a certain level after the HIV destroying it. You can't fight off anything people easily fight off. Karposis Sarcoma , the purple lesion cancer associated with early aids victims, is beaten easily by healthy people but hiv carriers whose immune system is in the aids stage can't fight off anything. Tommy couldn't fight off the toxoplasmosis. Pneumonia commonly kills aids patients but people with functioning immune systems are able to fight it off.
